That the! gain in purclrlasing pow-er has ‘N not been immense or general is ‘reflected in figures olf retail sales. ; Nevertheless business activ- ity is 31 per cent higher than in March, 30 per cent more per- sons are employed at particu- lar occupations, and these for- tunates are receiving 55 per lcent more wages than in March. Thus we are still at least slightly better off in tan- gible goods than we were six months ago, and very much better off in mental attitude. l'I‘he full effect of the ‘codes ‘has not yet ‘been manifested. -furthermore. And just as Alice found that she could not stop, once started on. the journey to Won- Iderland. so we connot now stop on the program the coun- try has initiated. The last week of September, ‘however, showed a gain of one per cent; the first gain in ten weeks, and one quite general in scope. Prices in the meantime are still rising, and employment and pay rolls at -the latest t-avai-l'able report had shown no signs of diminishing. Many are trying ulnsuccessfulily to. re- concile the business statistics in order to find their “latitude or longitude.” Why is there about price in- creases outstripping pay-roll gains, when prices since‘ March have risen 15 per cextl and the figures we have indi- ed 55 per cent in the same period? The answer is that under present conditions of widespread uemployment and uneven distribution of wage in- creases, a comparison of the percentage increases in pay rolls and in prices (or cost of living) tells us nothing about purchasing power. If seven instead of six men, out of population of ten, are employed and four of them have had their wages raised ‘from $20 to $22.50, this is a gain of 41 per cent for those Respectfull-y submitted, '.
