The iirst books were purchased in New iiaven. together with a bookcase. The latter is still in existence. The cost oi’ the books was $89. and because there was no express in those days, an item or 9 shillings 11 peace for \horse hire\ was entered. A competitor soon sprang up, how- ever, and in 1795 a second library, the Free library, was established with 77 subscribers who paid a fee equivalent to 75 cents.
