I feel that the ‘balance of the -money which we have on hand‘ could ‘be put to no greater »use.; than the payment of one months salary to the Firemen, Police, and other employees of our City, as it would not only relieve the hardships under which our employees are ‘suf- lfering today due to the fact that they have not been paid in. a long time, but would also put into immediate circulation at large sum of money amongst the ‘business men and taxpay- ers of our City, and which would greatly relieve the pre- sent tense situation. Respectfully, Joseph B. Eagan. Only within the inst few years hns aluminum begun to come into its own. for, until 1886. it could not be pro- duced clieuply. sz1_\'s- a writer in the Scotsman. The story of aluminum really begins in 1722. when a scientist premised that alum had a separable base, but 11 century elapsed ‘before the suggestion bore fruit. By using 1: method devised by Sir l-liumphry Davy. the Swedish scientist Oerstedt suc- ceeded in obtaining aluminum chloride. und :1 year later Wohler isolated the metal. This early aluminum was con- taminated with other substances, and was in the form of steel gmy powder. and then in 1845 Wohler obtained al.- most pure globules of the metal. Wohler‘s method involved the use 0! platinum vessels and potassium. which were expensive, and in 1854 n French chemist, by using porcelain vessels anl sodium, chenpened aluminum and made it 1 commercial proposition, or at least brought it within the range of possibility, for even then the metal was very dear. . Take the course opposite to custoln and you will almost always do well.- Rousseau. Honorable Board of Council. I Gentlemen: . It has been es» tabllshed that snnspots occur in de lnite if soniewlmt erratic cycles, some not short duration unq the longest of 11 years. Changes in positions of the planets, with varying grnvltntlomxl ef- fects, are helleved to cnuse these sun~ spots. M2‘.
