The rate of increase was particularly marked during the latter part of 1929 and during 1930. Even on the second- ary highways the facilities have been greatly augmented. so anyone desir- ing to make a call need travel but I relatively short distance to reach ll telephone. In Westchester County and in su- burban Long island the company has also carefully planned the placement of public telephones along the impor- tant routes. Consequently by May 1, in the latter territory. there were more than 3.600 such telephones. rep resenting a_ growth oi’ some 800 in- struments since 1929, while in West cheater approximately 600 instru- ments were added during the past two years. there being at present about 1.500 in service along the coun- ty's highways. Years ago. of course, the traflic did not warrant anything like the present extent oi telephones along the high ways, but efforts were constantly made to meet the needs of the travel- lag public. For a while boxes con taining telephones were attached to telephone poles at intervals along cer- tain highways. These installations. ho.wev.er. did not always prove satls~ factory. But when service stations be- gin to dot the roadsldcs. they imme- diately constituted a very effective location for serving the motorisrs telephone needs As a result more than ninety per cent oi‘ the highway telephones are installed at or near these stations.
