NY Rangers to help underwrite youth hockey program in Freeport By LAURA SCHOFER lschofei@liherald.com Dozens of boys and girls laced up their skates and hit the ice for hockey practice at the Freeport Recre- ation Center's ice rink last week. They are members of the Arrows, a youth hockey league whose home ice rink is in Freeport. Arrows Hockey is a non-profit associa- tion providing boys and girls ages 3 to 18 the opportuni- ty to become involved in amateur hockey through Instructional, Intramural and Travel programs. Take Marc Olak, a 4-year-old who is taking his first steps on the ice with Arrows Hockey He is in the Youth Development Program that teaches children how to skate and learn fundamental puck and stick handling skills. His father played hockey with the Arrows and now Marc \wants to follow in his father's footsteps,\ Piera Olack, the boy's mother said. But learning to play ice hockey takes time and money \Not everyone can afford to play\ Rob Albi, president of Arrow Youth Hockey, said. \We want to change that and make sure more kids get to experi- ence ice hockey\ . That's where the New York Rangers Assist Pro- gram comes in. It raises money for youth hockey pro- grams and allows lower-income children the opportu- nity to play hockey On Jan. 9, former New York Rang- ers Tom Laidlaw and Ron Greschner were at the Freeport Recreation Center's ice rink to promote the Assist Program, which this year will help raise money for Arrows Hockey's program. \We are very happy to have the Rangers here to train our youth,\ Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy said. This program will help provide money to deter costs to play hockey for lower-income children in Freeport.
