Milburn Creek Boat Basin is christened CX. O CL. £ i O CM The Milburn Creek Boat Basin is open for business. On Saturday, Oct. 29, local officials gathered at the newly renovated space to welcome boaters. \It's gor- geous,\ Laura Curran, a Nassau County legislator from Baldwin, said, referring to the new bulkhead, floating docks, ramps and the waterside boardwalk. \This is a project with a vision,\ she said, one that includes encouraging the community to use this public space for events and happenings. The project, which began last fall, cost $3.86 million, including $1.86 million from the county's capital budget and the remaining $2 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Superstorm Sandy Opened in 1971, Milburn Creek was heavily used in the 1970s, '80s and '90s. But a lack of upkeep in the intervening years, hi addition to Sandy, left the bulk- head, damaged and the county had to fence off part of the property. With the decline, came some security issues, but the improvements, including the new lighting, are designed to make the site safer and discourage loitering. The improvements are: • A structural replacement of the bulk- head, including new vinyl sheeting, deadmen anchors, timber piles, wales and tie-rods. • A new parking area next to the approximately 800-foot-long boardwalk. lOUmSHORESY Also, the existing boat trailer parking area will be resurfaced with permeable pavement. This will reduce the storm water runoff into Milburn Creek, because rainwater will be absorbed directly into the ground. • A new boardwalk, made of Brazilian ipe wood, also called Brazilian walnut or lapacho, a splinter-resistant, dense hard- wood that has been used on the Jones Beach and Long Beach boardwalks. • New lighting and fixtures throughout the parking lot and up the footpath that leads to Merrick Road. • In addition to the floating docks and ramps, a handicapped-accessible kayak launch will be installed. This will con- nect to the South Shore Blueway Trail, a 40-mile multi-jurisdictional looping trail for non-motorized boating throughout the South Shore bays. Additional work will include new plantings, stamped concrete retaining walls; benches and trash receptacles as well as a large trellis surrounding a pre- fabricated public restroom/office facility CONRATULATIONS AND BEST OF LUCK to all at Milburn Boat Ramp — John Cools, Legislature Laura Curran, Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy.
