CO r—I ! <u a T3 w IH I -8 a Fashion statements, bickering occupy village board by Linda Delmonico Prussen While Fashion Week was being cele- brated in New York City and on Long Island, it seemed in Freeport one fashion staple never goes out of style, the print- ed T-shirt, displayed again at Monday's Village Board of Trustees. It's become clear Freeport residents are regularly contributing to the econo- my in the form of customized T-shirts for the village's twice monthly meet- ings. At the last meeting a large group of residents sported white T-shirts with red print asking, \Where's the money?\ This week's fashion statement was instead red T-shirts with white print, worn by a handful of Mayor Andrew Hardwick detractors, calling for the mayor's impeachment. Though two block parties were approved without discourse, much of the rest of the meeting was dominated by verbal sparring and bickering. Trustee Carmen Pineyro expressed dissatisfac- .tion that her written statement from the previous month's meeting, which she was absent from, was not permitted by the mayor ttxbe read into the meeting by a fellow trustee. The statement questioned the use of the Freeport Recreation Center by an as-of- yet unknown entity for a number of dates in August. Her statement also strongly denounced 'the visit by El Salvadoran Vice President Sanchez Ceren. The ninth request to advertise a request for proposals for a forensic audit brought forth its usual controversy. This time Trustee Pineyro requested the agenda item be tabled until the next meeting. The Board- of Trustees DAVID BURGESS will lead off the Freeport Community Concert Association's 64th season Saturday. approved Ms. Pineyro's motion to table the item while the mayor, of course, objected. A number of veterans were present for agenda item IE: \Request approval to enter into a purchase/lease. agreement with the American Legion William Clinton Story Post 342 for the property on 925 South Ocean Avenue for a term 'of 99 years.\ Trustee William Kennedy asked that this matter be tabled for two weeks to discuss aspects of the purchase with the village attorney. Mayor Hardwick quickly responded, \I pray the board is moving forward on this property. I'm in favor.\ He added,-\Our veterans need a home in our village. It's shameful.\ . Trustee Pineyro said regarding the paper work she recently received con- cerning the purchase, \Certain things came up in the last minute.\ Trustee William White told the veterans, \There's no malice intended here.\ . Deputy Mayor Jorge Martinez said the papers for the purchase were only received by the board on Friday and he wanted an opportunity to go over the papers with the village attorney. When electric department agenda items were discussed, Freeport resident and reg- ular board meeting attendee Alan Jay questioned the cost .effectiveness of the solar panels installed on the Freeport fire- house on Broadway in November 2011. The board said the panels were obtained with a grant at no cost to Freeport, but they would look into the amount saved by the panels and see if the village had to pay for the panels and if they would be cost effective for any other buildings.
