Public hearings on redistricting begin September 20 The Nassau County Temporary Districting Advisory Commission met on September 5, and announced the first round of public hearings regarding the mapping of the county's legislative dis- tricts. Nassau County is required to draw new legislative maps that adjust for changes in the population and assure accurate representation of the electorate. This process takes place every 10 years. The new districts will go into effect for the November 2013 elections. The hearings are as follows - Thursday, September 20, Long Beach City Hall at 6 p.m.; Monday, September 24, Elmont Public .Library at 7 p.m.; Thursday, September 27, Glen Cove Landing School at 6 p.m.; and Wednesday, October 3, the Nassau County Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola at 6 p.m. The hearings will review the commis- sion's work to date, including the reso- lutions for suggested standards for redistricting presented by the Democrats and Republicans. The commission met in May and June and then last week. No resolution has been passed to date. \As we have said before, we want this process to be an open and transparent process as you, Mr. Maroney, said at the first meeting,\ said Nancy Rosenthal, co-chair of the League of Women Voters redistricting committee. \At the last meeting [June 28] both sides could not agree on a resolution, therefore we are presenting to you what we consider our consensus resolution, which we hope you will adopt,\ she added. The League's resolution supports \all plans [that] adhere to the principle of 'one person, one vote' and the Constitution of the United States of America; (b) all plans be in compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act and all other applicable laws governing the redistricting process; (c) that any pro- posed plan for districts ensures that they are contiguous, reasonably compact and fairly representative of identifiable com- munities of interest; (d) that all plans be judged on their own merit, without regard to any other governmental matter or policy issue before the county Legislature; (e) that all meetings and hearings be conducted in a public, trans- parent and open manner according to the Open Meetings Law and Public Officers Law; (f) that public hearings shall be held at least once in each of the three towns and two cities within Nassau County, at varying times and locations to ensure the greatest amount of public par- ticipation and (g) the commission web- site shall post notices of all meetings at least seven days in advance, post min- utes from all meetings, post all proposed redistricting maps and supporting data and provide opportunities for the public' to comment on the proposed maps.\ - Laura Schofer What is black and white, read all over and serves as a great educator?
