FEED THE HUNGRY: Long Island Cares Nassau Service Center, a 1,300 square foot facility located at 9 West Sunrise Highway, provides up to a 10- day supply of emergency food to families and individuals in need. It also pro vides a host of services, including job development and referrals. Mayor Andrew Hardwick recently visited the faclli^ and received a certificate of appreciation. November 5. at 2:30 p.m., a representative of the - Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation will talk ^ u t educating everyone about the existence of sea tur tles in our area. there is a need to monitor our local beaches in the fall for sea turtles that have foiled to migrate. By just walking our local beaches, one can become a monitor for this wtvthy project Thlking about Literature Talking about Literature is a monthly book discussion series'that meets on the first Friday every month from noon to 1:30 pm. You may pick up yoiir copy of the book about four weeks in advance of each program; you must return it on the day of the discussion. Bring a brown bag lunch and a friend; dessert and beverage will be provided. The book chosen for November 5 is “Desert” by J.M.G.Le Clezio and the leader is Suzanne Welker. After being driven from their land by French colo nial soldiers in 1909, Nour and his peo ple, \the blue men,\ search for a shelter in the desert. Interspersed with the story of Nour is the contemporary story of Lalla, a descendant of the blue men, who lives in Morocco and tries to stay true to the blood of her ancestors while experienc ing life as a modem immigrant. Classical music Phillip -Malamud, music historian, continues the fall series on Monday. November 8. 2 p.m., which will consist of celebrating the 2CKhh anniversary of the birth of Robert Scjiumann and Frederic Chopin. You will hear and see “clips” o f per formances by older and younger per formers. Concert On Sunday, November 7. at 2:30 p.m., the first in a series of six concerts cho sen by the Library’s Music Advisory Committee will feature soprano Karen Jolicoeur in works by Reynaldo Hahn. Kurt Weill. Ned Rorem and Richard Strauss among others. A powerful performer and an accom plished musician, she is noted for her poignant interpretations of classic and modem repertoire, which have met with critical acclaim. Ms. Jolicoeur has appeared with many opera companies at prestigious venues. As a concert soloist, she appeared at Carnegie Hall in the Faur^ Requiem and the Haydn Little Organ Mass. One critic cited “a glistening and distinctive quali ty of tone;” Ms. Jolicoeur earned her Bachelor’s degree at the Hartt School of Music and her Master's degree from the New England Conservatory. Computers On Saturday, November 6, from 10 a.m. to noon, Western Suffolk BOCES will present a Con^uter Sixth Grade Class where you will learn how to install and uninstall programs on your comput er, how to delete unwanted files and folders, and how to use the recycle bin.. Freeport residents may register any time; nonresidents may register at the reference desk beginning Monday, November 9. Registration is limited to 24 participants. Immigration On Wednesday, November 10, at 7:30 p.m., attorney Linda G. Naros of the Nassau County Bar Association will con duct an information-gathering program on various immigration topics. Registration is ongoing at the Reference Desk. Great Books Great Books: First Reading Series continues on Tuesday, November 9, at 1:30 p.m., with “The Power of the Majority\ by Alexi de Tocqueville. While it is clear that democracy must guarantee the expression o f the popular will through majority rule, it is equally clear that it must guarantee that the majority will not abuse its power to vio late the basic and inalienable rights of . the minority, the book explains. Picasso On Wednesday, November 10, at 2:30 p.m., artist and teacher Emilia Rabito Baer will talk about Picasso's works, which are probably the most widely exhibited of any artist. His works express how he viewed the world; not as seen by others. His wives, mistresses, and children are shown in his art. During his last decade, he expressed his feelings about his lack of privacy through the use of symbolism.
