He is owner/president of The Hampton Shipyards in East Quogue. by Fred Scopinich, Jr. Prohibition tales • \Wanda\ a 35' skiff built at Freeport Point 1926 was eventually captured off Moriches in 1931. This boat became a lobster boat in Brooklyn. « \Maureen\ was built at Freeport Point 1931 with three 500 hp engines On its first trip, the boat left Freeport with five Freeporters on board. The boat was stopped at the Inlet by an anchored Coast Guard boat. Two Freeporters jumped aboard the Coast Guardboat and held up the Coast Guard crew. The \Maureen\ continued out, found the liquor schooner, came home and unloaded before daylight. A skiff was sent out to pick up the two Freeporters holding up the Coast Guard crew. A small amount of cash was hidden in the Coast Guard boat and the Coast Guard crew was told \If you report us, we will report you for accepting a bribe.\ The Freeporter who told me this story said, \What could they do now!\ • A rum-runner knocked on my father's door about I a.m. and asked Fred if he could haul his boat. \It was sinking,\ he said. My father put his clothes on and proceeded to haul this boat out. When it was hauled the rum- runner reached in his pocket and gave Fred a wad of cash and said, \This boat is not sinking, it is full of liquor We're going to unload this boat in your boatyard. Go on home!\ • \Bella Marie\ was built at Freeport Point in 1932. Owned by a Rockville Center Syndicate, it was taken for a trip to the Schooner from the boatyard before it was completed, before it was paid for and before title was registered in the owner's name. The boat was returned to the boatyard after the first trip and completed. It was captured by the U.S. Coast Guard on its third trip and later sold at gov- ernment auction. • A rum-runner again awakened my father after midnight and asked if he could hide his contraband in our base- ment for a few days, The rum-runnei stated the Federal Men have Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway to New York City blocked off. My father refused at my mother's insistence 1 Fred suggested a large house on the corner of Nassau and Suffolk Streets. The bachelors renting this house said okay and collected three months rent for three days storage. • The \Mona Lola,\ a similar boat to Maureen, was coming in to Freeport on a cold January night in 1931, loaded with liquor sacks and five-gallon tins on deck. Charlie, the crewman said to Adrain, the captain \Watch out - the lights ahead are the barrack lights. \Adrian the captain said \No. We are one mile out, the lights are pound net fishing lights.\ In a few seconds, the boat hit the beach and grounded.
