Village hears plea for action against gangs •8 Freeport trustees heard an impas- sioned plea from the sister of a recent murder victim for action against gangs in the village and complaints about rac- coons at their regular board meeting Monday. The board also approved a zoning change for Golden Age housing. Marisol Cruz, whose brother, Miguel Adames, who was shot at least six times on his way home on Church Street with- in three blocks of his house, made an emotional plea to village officials to bring an end to gang violence \How many kids are they going to kill in our village?\ exclaimed Ms. Cruz, who attended the meeting with her par- ents. \We used to love Freeport and I went to school here. What can we do? What are we doing?\ She also presented a petition contain- ing 2,000 signatures calling for more decisive action to Village officials. Mayor William F. Glacken and numerous others who attended the meet- ing expressed condolences to the Adames family. \It's a terrible thing for a family to lose a family member,\ he said. \We are trying to work with school officials and community leaders to solve this problem.\ But he added it is \virtually impossi- ble to prevent such an incident any- where in this country.\ Raccoon invasion Resident Anna Mohammed added her comments to the call for more effective Child Care and Famify Center 212 South Ocean Avenue Freeport, New York Tel (516) 379-1825 Fax (516) 379-1880 We Currently Have Openhcp I Celebrating 37 Years of QuaUty Child Care Making Dreams Come True Today! She also complained of the infestation of raccoons in her neighborhood near Rosedale and Commercial Street. Asking if her situation was an isolated case, many audience members responded with a chorus of \Oh no's\ as the problem apparently affects several areas of the village. Of special concern are those raccoons seen going about during the day. The animals normally are nocturnal. \If they're out in the day, then they're dangerous and you have to do some- thing about them,\ exclaimed Eileen Weaver. Trustee William White Jr. noted that if the raccoons are seen foraging during the day, \they're sick or injured\ and the police could be called to deal with the animals. 'They're bold,\ said Ms. Mohammed. Waterfront noise A South Ocean Avenue resident, Fred Bellice, complained about excessive noise from businesses along Woodcleft that has been increasing for several years. \It's becoming a big problem and quality of life issue,\ he said. \Every restaurant has a band now and I can't even sell my house.\ (continued on page 15) I OQ C en rt- VO E? o Q. a >•» Enroll in Group Guitar Lessons Beginner Through Advanced fill styles taught by | Professional Guitarist a : Experienced Teacher Q-et ifte sfeifCs you ,-tteecC to tnalce ~ 5 ;V; N <C^jaEitns suco ^t^.V CttM fc«^,^tj>^ registration today!
