Annapolis is coming to town The village will welcome the annual visit of the sail training squadron from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis on Saturday, August 11. Six to eight sailboats will dock at the Esplanade on Woodcleft Avenue, and the midshipmen will be available on Saturday, August 11, and Sunday, August 12, from noon to 4 p.m., for tours aboard the sailboats or for infor- mation about the Naval Academy's four- year college program. While the midshipmen are here, Freeport's Fire Department will be hosting Nassau County's Second Battalion parade scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 11. The parade, which will include % r olunteers and equipment from five neighboring fire departments. will begin at Long Beach Avenue and Front Street and will end at the reviewing stand located across from the Esplanade on Woodcleft Avenue (Nautical Mile). More than 500 firefighters represent- ing Oceanside. Baldwin. Freeport. Island Park. Long Beach and Point Lookout.are expected to march in the Second Battalion parade Saturday evening along with the midshipmen from the Naval Academy. Plea for action against gangs from page 3 Mr. Bellice also said there is a problem with patrons of these businesses parking the cars along neighborhood streets ani in some cases, blocking driveways. North Main plans Kenneth Bagatelle, Northwest Civic Association president, asked about progress on plans to improve North Main Street. Mayor Glacken responded that improvements are being made in the vil- lage \from the waterfront northward but it is \a long, slow process.\ He said goals include allowing mixed use from property along the corridor, such as residential and office space, in addition to greater commercial diversity. Mr. Bagatelle also raised the issue of more and more day laborers congregat- ing in a wider area of Sunrise Highway beyond the designated parking lot near Dunkin\ Donuts, including the shopping center and Home Depot parking lots. The mayor said the issue of more cooperation with the village in policing the area is being discussed with die busi- nesses at those sites. Resident Michael Belkin complained about vandalism to his car that had recently been parked at the municipal lot near the train station. Mayor Glacken said there was \no easy solution\ and that installing a fence around the parking lot would cost more than $100,000. \We don't have the funds for fencing,\ he said. \I can't promise you a solution in two weeks. I don't see one that's inexpensive.\ Regular business In their regular agenda, trustees author- ized the sale of SI.6 million in bonds to rebuild and replace components of the generating facilities and electrical distri- bution system at Power Plant No. 2. The board awarded a $27,500 contract for submersible distribution transform- ers for the Electric Department to Central Moloney Inc., of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and a contract for towing impounded vehicles to Broadway Towing Inc. of Freeport for $85 per tow. Trustees reappointed Richard Quinn to the Commission for the Conservation of the Environment through April 2, 2012, and named Eddie Monroe to the Plumbing Boani The board approved a grant applica- tion of nearly $20,000 for the Edward Byrne Grant Narcotics Control Program. There is no cost to the village. Trustees approved a $20,380 joint funding agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey for the operation and maintenance of the tide gauge at Guy Lombardo Marina, of which $8,160 would be contributed by the USGS. Also receiving board approval was a Fire Department request to hold a battal- ion parade on Saturday, August 11, and three requests for block parties. Next regular meeting will be Monday, Auaust 20.
