U S I e ! <L> e from page 1 Rachel wrote to Mr. Joel asking if his song \Nunley's Carousel\ could be used on the restored carousel. ..... Though Rachej;,has not yet received a final go-aheadi|shf'has been corresponding with Rfc-Joe^. He sent her a copy of \Nunlef'sujGar-eusel\ on disk and \he asked,\ 'Do'^ou like it?'\ Mrs. Obergh said. \She did challenge him,\ Mrs. Obergh added. \He'll play the opening if she gets the carousel out of storage.\ Unfortunately, Mr. Joel did not respond to Rachel's offer. Rachel's contact with Mr. Joel origi- nated from an unusual situation. Rachel's brother, Andrew, 11, was pen- pals with Mr. Joel. Andrew first wrote to Mr. Joel after an article he read in Newsday about Mr. Joel building his own boat. When Andrew began the pen-pal friendship, he had no idea Mr. Joel was a famous singer. Rachel enjoys Mr. Joel's music. \I've Nunley's Carousel to ride again! been to two [of his conceits] - one in her stomach,\ she said, looking at her mom and grinning so her two adult front teeth could be seen. Though she was not even alive yet when Nunley's was open, Rachel understands and respects the nostalgia and importance of the carousel for many Long Islanders. \My mom told me all about the carousel,\ Rachel said. \She used to ride on it all the time.\ Rachel decided the carousel needs to be restored to its historic condition. Simply replacing the horses with fiberglass ones would not do. Why not fiberglass? \That's stinky,\ Rachel said. \The wooden ones have more history than the plastic ones.\ Wooden horses were actually carved. There will be some differences, though the carousel will be as historically accurate as possible. Mr. Joel's music is one exam- ple of a new twist. Another is that one of the two chariots on the carousel (both of which are still looking for adopters!) will FRANK ELECTRIC CO. • Complete Electrical Service & Repairs • Showroom, Supplies & Lamp Repairs Celebrating 58 Yrs. and 200,000 INSTALLATIONS! The Nunley's carousel, once restored, will be a vital nostalgic part of not just Long Island higtory, but of national history as well. ; \There's only three of these [older] carousels left in the country,\ Rachel said excitedly, her eyes bright. One is in Central Park and the other is in Hartford, Connecticut. The family took a trip through the city and up to Connecticut so they could get experience riding on similar carousels. \For research,\ Mrs. Obergh said. Later, the family will go to Ohio to check on the horses' restoration progress. When she gets there, Rachel is going to \see if all the horses got there in one piece.\ Once the horses make their gallop back to Long Island, their new home will be spinning around on Museum Row. \Museum Row is going to be a great place,\ Mrs. Obergh said. \Lots of kids.\ On Museum Row Day this spring, Pennies for Ponies set up a booth, sold T-- shirts and found adopters for three horses. Kids are already drawn to the carousel, even though it is not running yet. \A lot of the kids want to help out,\ Mrs. Obergh said. The Oberghs were working on a banner in their driveway for Pennies for Ponies, and \it was like a kid magnet.\ The family works together on Pennies for Ponies. Rachel is the president, she said, and her brother Andrew is security. \It's fun. I like helping out with it,\ Andrew said. \I could quit my day job and become her full-time secretary,\ said Mrs. Obergh. Though she is patient, Rachel is very excited about the restoration of Nunley's carousel. It is expected to be up and run- ning in the fall of 2008. \I'd like to be the first person to ride the lead horse,\ she said. But that will not be the only time she rides it. \We go to the museum a lot. I'm probably going to ride it every single day we're there.\ Once the Nunley's carousel is success- fully running again, Rachel plans to restore the old Nunley's Ferris wheel. The wheel now resides in Long Beach. Through Pennies for Ponies, Rachel has become somewhat of a local celebrity. \Some girl named her Build-A-Bear after me,\ she said.
