Former Freeport chamber president Wes Carman, Sr. is dead d> I 1 § la I •I £ W -4 Wes Carman, Sr., former president of the Freeport Chamber of Commerce who was also honored as its 2005 '\Citizen of The Year,\ has died at the age of 71 after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Carman was in the marine busi- ness since his high school days in Freeport. He was born June 29, 1934, and lived in Freeport his entire life. After graduating from Freeport High School, Wes joined the Air Force Reserve. While in the Reserve, his unit was activated for the Korean War. Wes's first job was at Freeport Point shipyard working for the Scopinich Family. The shipyard was located at the end of Woodcleft Canal. When the shipyard left the area,'Wes took a job around the corner with a marine business called Woodcleft Marine and, with time, Wes became a partner in the business. In • 1969, Wes purchased a marina on Obituaries Hudson Avenue and named it Wes Carman Marina. That marina is now called Approved Marine and Hydrohoist N.E. and is run by two of his sons, Douglas and Wesley, who grew up with the business and took it over several years ago. His love of boats and speed led him to an exciting life in boat racing. From the early 50s to 70s Wes dominated the circuit in hydroplane class boats, driving his 280 C.I. Hydroplane \Expediter winning races all over the United States and was often seen on the Wide World of Sports. Wes was the proud owner of the \Classy Lady,\ an antique boat once owned by his personal friend, Guy Lombardo. Back in the 70s Wes ran the first canoe race in Freeport which earned him the United International Press Man of the Year Award. He was also involved in the Round Long Island Boat Marathon, and Walter Henry Vogt Walter Henry Vogt died on Saturday, May 28, at the age of 81. Born March 31,1924 in Brooklyn, he spent his early childhood in Bellrose, and 70 years in Freeport. Walter, or \Wally\ as he'was known to his many friends, worked with his fami- ly in the famous \Vogt's Sandbar, Restaurant\ in Freeport after having started with Otto Kunz at the Seabreeze Restaurant, also in Freeport. He later worked and retired from the Nassau County Police Department as an EMT-P in the Nassau County Medical Center. Walter was very proud of his record of many lives saved over a long and distinguished career. He was a member of the Freeport FD starting with Engine Company and Hose Three, where he served a's Captain and with over 50 years of service is a life- time member. Walter was especially proud of his service as a member of the United States Navy during WWII. Walter will be missed by friends that stretch from Margaretville, New York, to his neighbors at Woodside in Florida. He was never really able to understand why friends he met along his jourriey through life loved him so much and cherished that friendship so much. He is survived by his wife Grace Vogt, with whom he just recently cele- brated their 58th Anniversary, his brother George Vogt and his wife Judy, his sister Marilyn Kaye and her hus- band Arthur. He is also survived by his daughters Valerie Boland and her hus- band William and Deborah Dohges and her husband Joseph, his grandchildren Shawn Epton, Jason DiLeo and Shannon Trub, as. well as his great grandchildren Patrick Epton, Ashley Epton, Anthony Furnari, Brandon Walter Aguilar, his sister-in-law Violet Winkler and her husband Robert, his godson and nephew Lt. Col. Glen Winkler, and nephew Wayne and his wife Dawn, as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held at the Florida Memorial Gardens, 5950 South US I, and Rockledge Florida. After a long absence, Wes was instrumental in bringing the Boat Show back to Freeport four years ago. Over the years, Wes headed many committees within the village, usually focused on the waterfront. He was a member of the Freeport Zoning Board of Appeals for eight years and served on the proj- ect IMPACT com- mittee. In 1998 Wes was voted business person of the year and received an award from the Nassau Council of Chambers. Some of Wes's memberships were Marine Trader, National Maritime Historical Society, Member 126733 and he was also a certified Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors member in good standing. Locally, he served on the advisory board of the Freeport corps of the Salvation Army, as well as on the board of the Woodward Mental Health Center. Wes served as president of the Freeport Chamber of Commerce in 1999 and 2000. The Carman family is well known, in this area. Wes' grandfather Settled in Freeport in the 1800s. Wes' Wes Carman? Sr. maternal grandfather was one of the founders of the National Biscuit Company. Carman street in Freeport was named after the Carman family. Wes was a devoted individual. He was devoted to his fiance and companion of 28 years, Pat Leahy. He was devoted to his three sons, Wesley HI, Douglas and Scott, their wives Becky and Terry and his six grand- children: Noelle, Amanda, Adam. Vicki, Jennifer and Doug. Mr. Carman will be sorely missed by his family and friends and all the residents of. Freeport, who benefit- ed by Wes' efforts to better the commu- nity in which he lived. Freeport village trustee Don Miller made the following statement on Mr. Carman's passing: \Wes Carman embodied all that is good about Freeport. His love for the community and .his deep involvement touched many and helped make Freeport the truly special place it is. To me per- sonally, Wes' friendship and 'support were invaluable. Although we will miss Wes immeasurably, his kindness and gentle nature will live on in our hearts for a long, long time.\ Obituaries are printed free of chage in this newspaper.
