FHS Mathletes score again Freeport schools arts festival VO u 2 OH CM OS W Q The Freeport High School Mathletes competed this year on the county, state and national levels, racking up a series of impressive victories at all levels. On the national level, Anthony Goldman was the American Mathematics Competition AMC 10 winner, with a score of 95, which places him on the National Honor Roll. Michael Drapala and Daniel Qkobi were the AMC12. winners-with scores of 102 and 104 respectively, rank- ing them in the top 5% of all students competing on the national level. In addi- tion, the team of Daniel Okobi, Michael Drapala, John Gillespie and Yan Mei Luo won the New York State AMC 12 Pedagoguery Award. One award is given to the school in each state with the best difference in team score on the AMC 12 from 2003 to 2004. On the state level, with one contest remaining, the team was ranked at eighth place in the county at the New York Math League competition. In the Interscholastic County Math League, Freeport Mathletes were undefeat- ed in their group for all six contests. In the first contest of the season, the team of Michael Drapala, Sabrina Geraci-Yee, John Gillespie, Daniel Okobi and Jeff Rodriguez-Shelton achieved perfect scores— a Mathletes team accomplishment that was last achieved over 25 years ago. Daniel Okobi finished in ninth place coun- ty-wide out of 925 students that competed this year. At the Nassau County Math Tournament, held at SUNY Old Westbury, the team of Michael Drapala, John Gillespie, Yan Mei Luo, Alex Naidoo, and Daniel Okobi finished in 10th place in the county, out of 109 teams competing. In addition, Daniel Okobi finished the tour- nament as the #1 junior in the county,'out of 140 juniors that competed. The team, coached by teachers Peter Bruzzo and Joe D'Agostino, was recently honored by the Freeport Board of Education for its outstanding accomplish- ments. The Office of the Arts of the Freeport Public School; is proud to present the Festival of the Arts, to be held in Freeport High School. Outstanding groups from Atkinson School, Dodd Middle School and Freeport High School will perform: Mixed and Select Choruses, Concert Choir, Concert Bands, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensembles, Orchestras, and Select Orchestras from each school. In addi- .tion, student artwork will be exhibited in the main lobby. Following is the schedule of perform- ances for the festival, all beginning at 7 p.m.: • Monday, May 10, Caroline G. Atkinson School. • Tuesday, May 11, John W. Dodd Middle School. • Wednesday and Thursday, May 13 and 14, Freeport High School. These concerts will showcase the tal- ents of over 1,000 talented young musi- cians and artists from the Freeport Public Schools. The community is invit- ed to attend this free concert series, and share the pride!
