O O ri / 3 60 •a £ 3 H W Q < W _J w £ H Hispanic American Club continues volunteering by Joan Delaney The Hispanic-American Women's Club of Long Island (HAWC) has a long history of volunteer service in ihe com- munity. Founded by Judith Ortiz well over a decade ago, the funds they raise are used for worthy humanitarian caus- es. Their most visible work, however, is the assistance they provide to children. The bilingual members of the non- profit 1 organization serve as volunteers to the Gift of Life, Inc. which is a char- itable organization associated with local Rotary Clubs that brings in children from various parts of the world for heart surgery. Many of these children come from Latin American countries and they and their family members cannot speak English. The HAWC volunteers serve as : translators and also provide much-need- ed companionship and support: In addition to translating, the volun- teers transport, visit, and at times even house the children and their guardians. HAWC members serve on a completely volunteer basis, saying that their pay- ment is \the smiles, hugs and kisses by happy and healthy children after sur- gery.\ In the past the surgeries took place at St. Francis Hospital, although today many of the operations take place at Montefiorc Hospital in the Bronx. It costs $5,000 to bring a child to the United States'for the heart-related sur- gery, a sum which pays for hospital expenditures since the participating sur- geons and medical personnel donate their lime. HAWC will be holding its annual din- ner/dance with, a journal on Saturday, October 4, from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Farmingdale. A donation of $45 per per- son will be used for the Gift of Life pro- gram. In advertising'the dinner, HAWC literature stales, \These are everybody's children...we will only have to blame ourselves if llieir hearts stop beating because we slopped caring.\ , Those interesled in attending or sup- porting the group may call 379-0619 for further information. ot frooport library Job search Workshop On Wednesday, September 3, at 7 p.m., the Job and Education Information Center of the library will offer a free Resume and Job Search Workshop, presented by Patricia Weiss, Career Consultant.
