Hospice care On Tuesday, May 6, at 10:30 a.m., the library will present a free program entitled \What You and Your Family Should Know .About Hospice Care\ presented by Elizabeth Dunn of Elizabeth Dunn Hospice Care Network. You will find out what services are avail- able to help those that are facing end-of- life illnesses. Free film On May 9, at 3 and 7 p.m., the library will present a free film, \Maid In Manhattan.\ A woman takes a job as a chambermaid in a luxury hotel in New York. She meets and falls in love with a debonair heir to a political dynasty who mistakes her for a society woman. But when the truth is revealed, the two find that they are worlds apart. Rated PG13, 105 min., 2003. Hail, Caesar! On Tuesdays at 2 p.m., May 6, 20 and 27, Bob Sweeney, former Mayor of Freeport, continues his video course on the history of Ancient Rome. The May 6 session will focus on: Social and Cultural Life in the Late Republic; Antony and Octavian; The Second Triumverate. Child Safety On Saturday, May 17, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the library, in cooperation with the Freeport Police Department and the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board, will host a.Buckle Up Child Safety Seat Program. You are welcome to come into the Children's Room with your children and help them make their own safety badges, check out some safety stories and take a peek at the video \Officer Buckle and Gloria!\ Registration will take place in the Children's Room beginning May I. Appleton honored On Tuesday, May 6, at 11 a.m., there will be a presentation ceremony with the Appleton family; -whose donation, in memory of Norman Appleton, enabled the Library .to purchase Ingles Sin Barerras - an extensive 12-volume set to help Spanish-speaking patrons learn English: ; Norman R. Appleton, a long time Freeport resident and Treasurer of the Friends of the Library, died August 10, 2002. He had owned and operated Appleton's Hardware in Freeport for 30 years. Art Exhibit The talented students of Freeport Junior and Senior High Schools, grades' 7 through 12, will display their artwork in the main lobby of the library from Monday, May 5 through Thursday, May 29. The student exhibits at the Library are coordinated by Catherine Rode of the Art Department and members of the art faculty. Everyone is invited to the reception on Wednesday, May 7, from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. Talking About Literature Talking About Literature is a monthly book discussion series that meets on the first Friday of every month from noon to 1:30 p.m., from September through June. For your full enjoyment, it includes discus- sions of classics as well as contemporary literature. You may pick up your copy of the book about four weeks in advance of each program; you must return it on the day of the discussion. You may bring your lunch; dessert and beverage will be provid- ; ed. The book chosen for the May 2 meeting is \Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress\ by Dai Sijie, a beguiling story about the resilience of the human spirit, the wonder of romantic awakening and the • magical power of storytelling. The discus- sion leader is Al Landsbergis. Investment workshop On Wednesday, May 7, at 7 p.m., the Job and Education information Center of the library will offer a free workshop on Investment Decisions When Changing Jobs, conducted by Michelle Devine, financial adviser. Registration is not required. Sooner or later you will face a decision about what to do with distributions from your company retirement plan. At this workshop, you will learn about the pros and cons of each decision and some help- ful hints along the way. Free concert On Sunday, May 4, at 2:30 p.m., the Freeport Memorial Library will present a free concert by the pianist Blair McMillen, the last concert in a series of six chosen by the Library's Music Advisory Committee. Seating is one half hour before the pro- gram. Mr. McMillen received his Bachelor's degree in history and piano from Oberlin College and received a Masters' degree from the Juilliard School. Mr. McMillen has received critical acclaim for his per- formances throughout the United States and abroad. Decoupage Workshop The Young Adult Department of the library will be having a Decoupage Tray Workshop for young adults in grades 6-12 on Friday, May 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Julianne Gaudioso will bring all of the supplies needed for this 1 1/2-hour class, including the wooden tray and various paints and decal patterns. Limited to 20 participants. Non-refundable materials fee of $3.50 is due at the time of registration. Registration is ongoing. 'Road To Perdition' The library will be showing the film, \Road to Perdition,\ on Tuesday, May 6 at 3:30 p.m. This will be the only showing because the Community Room is not available in the evening. This film tells the story of Mike Sullivan, who is a mob hit man and also a loving, devoted father. Starring Jude Law, Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. 1 hour, 57 minutes. Rated R (Under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.) Mother's Day craft The library will present Mother's Day Craft Programs for children in grades K- 6. Children in grades K-2 are invited to attend the program on Monday, May 5. Children in grades 3-6 are invited to attend the program on Thursday, May 8. All sessions will begin at 3:45 p.m. Free tickets will be available at the Children's Desk beginning April 7. In all of the above programs, where reg- istration is limited, preference will be given to residents of the Baldwin School District.
