Collins, former •p New York Slate £J Supreme Court Justice u D and Judge of the Appellate Term, Ninth ff and Tenth Judicial £ Departments, died at j2 her home in Freeport ^\ on December 11 after oj a brief illness. She ^ was 81 years old. ^ Justice Collins was W born in Montreal, w Canada. She received K her law degree from ^ St. John's University in 1951. In 1997 the school awarded her an honorary doctor- ate. She was admitted to practice law in New York State in 1951, and to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1960. She became a licensed practical nurse in 1975. ' Justice Collins ser-ved additionally at the Nassau County Family Court and Nassau County District Court. She was in private practice from 1951 to ' 1954. She was deputy Town of Hempstead attorney and counsel to the Zoning Board of Appeals in Freeport and later in Hempslead. Judge Judy Collins She belonged to the sports from page 14 four. Day two of the tournament found the Lady Devils at their best. Sawyer (16) Devon (11) and Mason (10) all hit dou- ble figures in the 43-35 victory over Great Neck South. Down by four and a half, the Lady Devils attaeked the basket in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Rebels 16-6. Devon, who was in foul trouble and sat much of the first half, hit seven of her points in .the third quarter. Sawyer played with great confi- dence and hit both her layups and out- side shots. Ashley Straugh (9), Tiesha Collier (8) and Jeannette Scott (6) combined for 23 as Team A defeated the Wantagh Warriors 27-11. After a rough first half the Lady Devils came out strong in the first quarter. Ashley Straughn really seems to understand the halftime adjust- ments that needed to be made. She scored seven of her points in the third quarter and dominated the hoards. Alternating between a 2-2-1 press and half court man-to-man defense, the JV Lady Devils held the Lady Warriors to just 11 points. She also was a member of the Freeport Lodge, Sons of Italy, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Ladies Auxiliary, Freeport Chamber of Commerce, the Freeport Over-occupan- cy Task Force and the advisory board of the Freeport Post Office. Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Angie Cullin, a close friend of the judge, said, \Patricia Collins was involved in her community for many years. She was always working to improve the quality of life in the village, town and county. She was a tough judge but a fair judge. She was always there to help people. She would go out and buy groceries for people who couldn't afford them. She was a very special person.. I knew her for over 40 years and spoke with her every day. I am going to miss her very much. This whole village is going to miss her.\ A close friend of 43 years. Frank Fee, formerly of Freeport and now living in Merrick described the judge as \a strong, religious woman.\ He added. \She had a good life.\ A Mass of Resurrection was Monday.
