The cre- ative problem solving event, sponsored by Nassau BOCES, drew competition of. more than 500 students from across Long Island, charging them with the task of finding creative solutions to pre- determined problems which were either technical, artistic or performance-based in nature. Odyssey of the Mind encourages stu- dents to use their imagination, creative thinking and team-building skills to solve one of five different problems, all while having fun. Teams, who competed in one of three age groupings - Division I (grades 3-5), Division 11 (grades 6-8) or Division III (grades 9-12) - were judged on effectiveness, style and over- all effort, as well as on creativity in response to an \on-the-spot sponta- neous\ brain teaser. This year's selection of open-ended problems included: • The Chameleon - building a chameleon-like vehicle that changes, along with team members, as it travels through three different environments. • OMER's Earthly Adventures - creat- ing an original performance about pre- serving the Earth's environment while completing three tasks. 8 Classics ... Center Stage - interpreting a literary classic through a performance with dance and stage set. 0 It's a Snap! - designing several struc- tures made only of balsa wood and glue that snap together and interlock without help of fasteners to hold hundreds of pounds of weight, while the structure itself is only 11-15 grams. • The Ostrich Factor - presenting a humorous and artistic performance based on an ostrich's habit of becoming invisible when hiding its head. Part of the public school system, the Board of Cooperative- Educational Services (BOCES) of Nassau County provides a wide variety of shared servic- es to the 56 school districts in the coun- ty. In addition to academic competitions, other programs include special educa- tion and career education, alternative schools, distance learning and teacher professional development training. The Stale University of New York (SUNY) at Farmingdale, Long Island's first public college, has evolved into The College of Technology. Farmingdale offers students the opportunity to study in small classes on a 380-acre campus in the heart of Long Island..
