Archer opens reading garden Elementary students at Archer Street School in the Freeport_ School District held their Future Corps 2001 Literacy Celebration and grand opening of their new community reading .park. After receiving a grant from Newsday's Future Corps and donations from local businesses, the Archer Street School celebrated the opening of the newly built outdoor community reading park equipped with benches, a \bridge of knowledge,\and a \reading garden.\ Several students, known as Young Managers, greeted the teachers, stu- dents, and several community residents as they gathered outside the school for the festivities. The Young Managers, who helped coordinate the event, kicked off the celebration with the Pledge of Allegiance. Afterwards, first- grade students entertained guests with a song. Archer Street was presented with several proclamations by Nassau Coun- ty Executive Thomas Gulotta's office, Freeport Village Deputy Mayor Renaire Frierson. and Senator Charles Fuschil- lo's office. During the event, Archer Principal Paula Lein commemorated the occasion by cutting an official red ribbon. Attendees were encouraged to take advantage of the new park over (he summer. In addition, students were told that they could add a new flower bulb to the \reading garden\ for every ten books they read over the summer. Archer Street first-grade teacher and event coordinator Danielle Grandin said, \I feel that the new reading park is going to promote literacy not just in the school, but also in the Freeport com- munity. This park will also represent the connection between Archer Street students and residents of the community.\ ARCHER STREET YOUNG MANAGERS take a break from their hard work coordinating the Future Corps 2001 Literacy Celebration for a picture. photo provided by .Allison Gayne, Syntax Communication Group studont no\A/s {/ , f;-'>,•;,', - 1 /t •\!\ -,'/•/\ 'j ••-.•• 14 . <•. *; .:>...•.• ' . *•:. s-. ** f .-. . •; \A v< ... .
