The Thirty-third Annual Honors Program found many of Freeport's finest athletes being honored. Eddie Gordon won the Babe Gangemi Memorial Scholarship given by the fami- ly and friends of Felix \Babe\ Gangemi, a graduate of the FHS Class of 1934 and star football lineman at FHS who went on to play at Fordham University in the Bronx and for the Jersey City Giants pro- fessional team. The $1000 scholarship is presented annually to a graduating senior who has been a member of the FHS Foot- ball Team who is of good character and plans to play collegiate football. Eddie will be attending Fordham on a football scholarship in the fall. As the recipient of the Finer Awar.d for most out- standing lineman in Nassau County, he SIMEON DION BARRETT, left, was awarded the Billie and Irving Woolf Memorial Scholarship. demonstrated his skills on the football field and as a member of the National Honor Society, he demonstrated his skills in the classroom. Jennifer Lee (Class of 1995) was a bright, energetic, and talented youngster who died accidentally during the summer, of 1992. She was an honors student, a violinist in the high school Orchestra, a varsity player on the Badminton and Ten- nis Teams, and was a member of \It's Academic,\ Mathletes, Mock Trial and Voyageur. This scholarship has been given by her friends and teachers to help in some small way to perpetuate Jen- nifer's zest for life. Neetu Papali is the perfect candidate for this award. Neetu is a member of the Girls Varsity Tennis Team, member of the National Honor Society, peer tutor and mathlete, She was recently honored at the Kiwanis Dinner for her outstanding work with the Key Club. She will be attending SUNY-Binghamton in September. Neetu is graduating 10th in the senior class. Simeon Dion Barrett was awarded the Billie and Irving Woolf Memorial Schol- arship given in loving memory by Mr. and Mrs. Terrance Haise. The award is given to a senior wrestler who has shown good character and sportsmanship, Dion qualified this year to represent NassatD. County at the state level. He will be attending the Naval Academy in the fall. \Dion is a fine gentleman and a great ath- lete,\ reflected Haise. The Freeport Sports Boosters Club presented eight $250 scholarships to graduating seniors who have been active in sports for a minimum of two years, exhibit enthusiasm, dedi- cation and sportsmanship. Jonathan Beauford played foot- ball as well as winter and spring track. A member of the Nation- al Honor Society and Ironman Club, he will be attending Princeton in the fall. Renee Brown is headed for the Uni- versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A member of the Varsity Basketball and Lacrosse .Teams, she has worked hard athletically. As a member of the National Honor Society, she has worked equally as hard on her studies. Cornell will receive the talents of Janine Cochol. This National Honor Society graduate will head to the University of Central Connecticut on a lacrosse scholarship. Wolphy Joseph is heading to Skidmore on a full academic scholarship. As a member of the National Honor Society and Varsity Tennis Team, she was able to balance her academic and sports obligations. Patrick Khalil 'is an peer tutors. Chimenzie will be attending SUNY Stony Brook and Joseph will head for NYU. James Seymour and Renee Brown received the George F. Emma, Jr. Memo- rial Scholarship. George Emma was a Social Studies teacher, basketball and baseball coach, and Athletic Director at Freeport High School until his death at age 45 in 1983. He was a dedicated pro- fessional who truly loved his work.
