Freeporters recycling reminder Freeport's Department of Public Works fs reminding residents that the sanitation department maintains certain regulations concerning recyclable items as well as directions on how to dispose of potentially dangerous'materials. Under the S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program, sponsored by the Town of Hempstead, certain items that are environmentally hazardous, including aerosol cans, batteries and dangerous products such as paint thinner, solvents, spot remover, drain cleaners, flammable liquids, kerosene and the containers used to handle these products should be brought to one of the STOP program col- lection sites on the dates and locations list- ed beJow. If you need to dispose of partic- ularly dangerous items such as ammuni- tion, explosives, fireworks, infectious or medical waste, propane or oxygen tanks, radioactive materials, fire extinguishers, or unknown or unlabeled items call the Town of Hempstead at 489-5000 for fur- ther information. Glass items to be collected by Freeport's own recyclables program include food and beverage bottles and jars - clear or tinted glass; soda, juice, wine and liquor bottles. Rinse out all food containing items to avoid attracting bugs and rodents. Metalitems that are recyclable include food, animal food, juice and soda cans. Plastic recyclable items include soda bot- tles, milk and water jugs, laundry-related products, shampoo and other beauty supply bottles, as well as plastic bottles containing food items such as salad dressing, syrup, mustard and ketchup. Glass items that are not recyclable are dishes, cups, serving plates or other items that are ceramic or have been made from clay, as well as light bulbs, and mirrors. Non-recyclable metal items include the hazardous products that should be taken to a STOP program location. Those items are listed above and include metal containers for oil, paint, pesticides, herbicides, and aerosol cans, including hair spray contain- ers. Non-recyclable plastics include grocery store bags, stretch wraps, caps, lids or spray pumps for shampoo, or hair spray contain- ers, margarine and yogurt containers, and any plastic containers that have been used to store pesticides, herbicides, solvents or other hazardous materials. In addition, foam products, egg cartons, and microwave containers along with plastic flowerpots and plastic toys are not recyclable. Freeport residents who live in multiple- dwelling buildings, condos, or co-ops, must contact their building owners, managers or speak to the members of the board of direc- tors to request a recycling program be established with their particular garbage collector. In many cases, a well-organized recycling program may lower the cost of garbage collection for the residents. For information concerning the recycling dates for your neighborhood, call the Sani- tation Department at Freeport's Department of Public Works at 377-2375.
