FREEPORT STUDENTS from teacher Larry Sheridan's Science-Class gather at the Milburn pond to release trout into the water. FHS Students release trout Students from Science Teacher'Larry Sheriden's Class released 91 brook trout fingerlings they have grown from eggs under a program called \Trout in the Classroom.\ The program is sponsored by the Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimit- ed, with a grant from the Norcross Wildlife Foundation. Last November the class received 300 fertilized eggs from the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery. The . eggs hatched out young fish just before Christmas vacation. Using a special cold water chiller designed for this program the students reared the young brook trout to 4 inch fingerlength size. The students learned the importance of cold clean water and how hard it is to maintain. The stu- dents hope to help Milburn Creek, located on the border of Freeport and Baldwin, restart its native brook trout population. Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited. John Fischer said that he wants to teach the students to be the future stewards of their natural resources.
