Girl Scouts enter the 21st century During Girl Scout Week, March 11-17, Girl Scouts from around the country will celebrate the anniversary of the organiza- tion's founding 89 years ago. With the same dedication that the twelve initial Girl Scout members had in 1912, local girls will participate in activities that celebrate the fun and friendship that Girl Scouting provides. From nature walks 'and learning Morse code in the beginning of the twentieth cen- tury, to meeting with'Congress and devel- oping web sites in the year 2000, Girl Scouts has always, been in step with the times. Traditional activities to commemo- rate Girl Scout heritage will take place nationwide, with girls performing, com- munity service projects, wearing uniforms to school and houses of worship, holding birthday celebrations and much more. \As we celebrate the founding of Girl Scouting, we continue to commit our- selves to providing girls with a place where they can'develop qualities of char- acter, conduct, and community service, and in the process grow into tomorrow's leaders,\ said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. \While the values that were syn- onymous with Girl Scouting in the begin- ning of the twentieth century still hold true today, we continue to evolve with a pro-\ gram that works best for girls in the twen- ty-first century.\ Through a.recent study the organization found that although girls are maturing ear- lier then previous generations, they still very much want and need to express their concerns and, dreams. Along with parents, teachers and responsible-adults, Girl Scouting provides a safe environment where girls everywhere can express them- selves and obtain the skills to become con- fident women. March 12, 1912 marked the beginning of an organization that for almost nine ' decades has helped girls grow stronger. Founder Juliette Gordon Low's vision of bringing something \special to girls of America and the world\ culminated in the founding of the Girl Scouts, where girls throughout the nation develop physically, mentally and spiritually.
