' L. Two women build a family legacy by Bill Braun It's a famUy busiccss; i restaurant that has been passed down from one generation to another, from father to son and in this case from moiher-ia-liw to daQ£bter>in*Iaw. Doris Taylor and Florence Ehrhart arc not related by blood but both women had (be courage end ability to step into their husband's shoes after they died and continue the family business. It all began in 1945 uhen Captain Phil and his bride Florence bought the property at 245 W oodclefi Avenue from Ben Eldred. They had big plans for their restaurant. “Captain Phil EhThan’s\; plans that included rcnov-at- ing and expanding the building. The renovation began in 1947 and a second story was added for living quarters. Under their tutelage Captain Phil's becam e one o f the most popular Freepon dining and drinking spots. But in 1948. Captain Phil died, leaving Florence to raise a young son, also named Phil. This young boy learned the business at bis mother’s feet and when he grew up, helped run the restaurant. Doris Taylor moved to Freeport in 1953 and met Phil in 1959; by 1971 they were husband and wife living across the street from the restaurant. But tragedy struck the Ehrhart family once again and Phil Jr. died in 19S1. Doris quickly came to the assistance of her elderly raothcr*ln-law and together they operated the restaurant and bar. Shortly after the new transi tion, Florence, now Ln her 80s. retired and Dvvis became sole proprietor. Doris is also co-owner of Ehrhart's Clam House located rsext door, ^ c ia llrin g in fresh seafood. Doris u y s that she has many^ bless ings, two children and four grandchil dren. “Chances arc good,\ she said, “that the business will continue in the family name.” E hrharts ' CAPT.
