First Squad detectives are investigating. • A resideot on Devonshire Road based unit was brought to strength by marching through the streets of Harlem, accompanied by a jazz band. The band was led by First lieutenant James Reese Europe who, prior to joining the 369th, had one of the early and most popular jazz bands in Harlem. The band, deployed w ith the Regiment to France, was later detached by General John Pershing to make an eight-ciry tour. The band was the first to introduce the French to jazz, a music they immediately e m b r a ^ with great enthusiasm. Later, responding to the love o f jazz among the French, musi cians such as Duke E llington and Josephine Baker later went to France to perform when they were unable to find work in New York.
