Nicole Berberena swam a personal best in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:25.17 and took a first place medal for her efforts w hlle team mate Julia Papayanopoulos completed the 1-2 fmish for the Lady Devib in the event. It was Shayla Rose and Ernest Kight, Jr. who held the first place tre^hies at the end of the Faculty-Student Tennis Tournam e n t. Froeport 516*86 T*0560 Breast cancer education for African-Americans in Freeport P h y llis Carter, representing the Reftige Church o f O irik in Freeport, is learning about a new outreach cam paign to educate African-Americans about breast cancer called \A Gift for life Block Walk.\ At a kidt-off dinner recently attended by women ministers, ministers' wives and other female church leaders, Ms. C a rter beard from the Adelphi New Y o rk Breast C ancer H o tline and Support Program and Sisters Network a b ^ a new initiative that will encour age women to learn breast sclf-ezami- natioo and have mammograms. A t the meeting, participants were bHefed oo mammography and breast self-exam ination by D r. N ancy Dintenfas of the Breast Imaging Center o f St. Francis H o spital and C h ris M ancuso of the Breast and Cervical ^ Screening Program at the N a ssau County Dqjaitment of Health. Chairing * the program were Hillary Rutter, direc- 7^ tor of (be A d e ^ program and W3ma | ^ C a r r ^ president of Sisters Network o f ^ Long Island, an African-American sup- port group. ^ The plan is for participants to return ^ to tbeir churches to recruit volunteers to 3 ^ work on this educational project which involves visiting neighbors door-to- * door to distribute packets of informa- 3 ^ tioo that provide material and resources ^ oo breast cancer. The volunteers will * also encourage women to get mammo- 3(C gram s and help set up appointments w h en feasible. The D e p a rtm e n t of Health Mobile M a m m o g r^y van will go into the various communities on spe cific days to enable women to receive low or no-cost mammography screen ing. The outreach program is funded by a grant provided by Race for the Cure of the Susan Komen Foundation.
