Bahjlon il IV. 1:25 >rJi Ocean Sting operation In Freeport and Hempstead yields 3 suspects Criminal charges ha>e been filed by the Nassau County District Attorney's office for various violations of the Environmental Conservation Law fo)> lowing a sting operation conducted in Freeport and Hempstead. Three companies were videotaped removing the D A 's sim ulated haz ardous waste and asbestos from untSer- cover locations in Freeport and Hempstead and disposing of tbena unlawfully. The investigation was con ducted w ith the New. York State D e p artm ent of Environm ental Conservation. “With the assistance of the County's Depanment o f Public Works, we filled six 55 gallon drums with simulated haz ardous waste $01011005,” Nassau County D istrict A ttorney Denis Dillon explained. “ Large yellow Hazardous Waste stickers w ere affixed to each of the drums and targets w ere asked if they would remove the drums from our building. In two instances, unlicensed L*ansporters agreed to remove the drums and dispose of them illegally.” ^fe said that in one instance, a land scaper agreed to remove the drums from an undercover location in Hempstead for $450. The defendant was videotaped loading the “hazardous waste\ onto his truck and having an emplojee peel the yellow “ Hazardous Waste” stickers off the drums. “The illegal disposal of hazardous waste and asbestos is a serious prob lem.” said Mr. Dillon. “This type of conduct threatens the health and safety of the public and Long Island's pre- . cious groundwater.” If convicted, the two defendants each face up to one year in jail and/or $25,000 fine. The third defendant faces three months in jail and'or a $10,000 fine. arrested for boat burglaries Three Freeport residents were arrest ed by members o f the First Squad recently in connection with multiple . boat/yacht burglaitea committed ovei the past tw o weeks in Freeport. Arrested were Riebirdo Rivera, 18, of Guy'Lombardo Avenue; and two youths. Detectives were alerted by a night security guard of suspicious activity in the maritu and the three suspects were arrested . The suspects are each charged with multiple counts of burglary in the sec ond degree in connection with burglar ies and damage to boats in the Frttpon Yacht Club, Travelers Marina and the Jeff Star M arina. Stolen property, including TVs, VCRs, microwave ovens and jew elry, have been recovered and are in the process o f being returned to their owners. A&sault and burglary at Lexington Avenue 4 A Richmond Hill man has been arrested for burglary and assault that occuned in Freeport on October 23. Police said A n toine O g arro, 25, kicked in a rear door at 235 Lexington Avenue at 11:20 p.m. and became involved in a physical confrontation with a man at that address. During the scuffle, the victim suffered a cut on his face and the suspect fled. The victim was taken to the Mercy Hospital for treatment. Police said Mr. Ogarro returned to the scene at 11:50 p.m. and assaulted a woman in the residence by striking her with a telephone, causing injuries to her head and face. The victim was taken to the South N assau Com m u n ities Hospital for treatment. Mr. Ogarro was charged with two counts of burglary in the first degree and assault in the first degree. Robbery suspect arrested at Claurome Place A Freeport man was krrested for rob bing a Chinese restaurant in Freeport on Octobcr25. Police said that on two occasions - October 23 and October 25 - Michael Martin. 17, o f Claurome Place, alleged ly entered the W in W ing Chinese Restaurant and forcibly'stole money from the place. Police said on the October 23 incident that Mr. Martin was aided by four other robbers, some of whom w ere armed with guits. The ing incidents were report- ed by the S’ossau County Police Department: • A resident at Lakeside D rive, Baldwin, reported being burglarized on October 24, at 11:20 a m. The com plainant left the bedroom to see who was walking up the stairs o f the home. The burglar fled out the front door before the owner could get a descrip tion. The loss is unknown at this time.
