The Girls Varsity Soccer Team won ari impressive’ 6-1 victory over the Golden Tornados of Lawrence. Lawrence scored first hut then Freepoa U'ghtcd its defense allowing only five more shots on goat The attack came 16 life after Melissa Delaney scored the Lady Devils first goal. Sarah Gerrie led Freeport’s scoring with two goals while Shannon McNally had one goal and one assist. Alex Puccino and Nicole Dciguidice completed the Lady Devils offensive attack while Tara Grubbs contributed two assists to the cause. Coach Diane Wahlers indicated that the girls were sluggish in the first half . of the Mepham game and it cost them a MClory. “Although they played much belter in the second half, they could not m ake up the deficit,” comm ented W ahlers. Jackie Sm ith,. Danielle Espinette, Carina Arm ario, and Shannon McNally scortd in Freeport’s 7-4 loss. Freshman Lauren Rctzlaff made 13 saves on goal in the second half. The Girls Soccer Team plays - Locust Millcy n e x t'. The Lady Devils Tennis Team opened its season with a close 4-3 vicio^ over last year’s division winner. Carle’ place; Freeport look the first three points as singles Christina Walker, Ellen Gtnzbursky, and Susan Rugg\ a ll won their singles matches. Walker’s strong forch^d strokes and blazing backhands were the keys to her (6-1), (6-0) victory. Ginzbursky’s . hustle and consistency enabled hci^ to defeat her opponent in straight sets. Rugg lost her first set ( 1 - 6 ) but rallied .10 the - o ccasion with renewed determination to take the match ( t- 6 ), ( 6 - 2 ) ,( 6 - 2 ). . . Freeport’s fourth point came from third doubles Lorrel Qkeson and - Sabelia G u ardado as the sun was setting in the west Excellent net play from Guardado and deep forehand shots from Okeson insured the (6-4), (7-5) victory. . Coach Dawn Schlich is excited about, the growing number of girls coming out for the Girls Varsity Swimming Team . a t the high school. Freeport’s roster shows twcniy-ihrcc swimmers, six of whom arc from Dodd Junior High. The girls first meet will be held a t State University of New York at Farmingdalc. . “I expect alot this year from Melanie Anson,. Christina Feilc, Amanda Toboado and Kathleen Martin,** • commented Schlich. Anson and Fcile will both be swimming the breast and freestyle. .Toboada is strong in backstroke and freestyle races while Martin should insure points in the diving category and breast stroke event ■ Elsewhere, the Boys Varsity S.occcr Team lostaclose2-l game to Westbury . ■ and a 6-2 game against the Ranw f i ^ West Hempstead. Goalie Dawd Riley . made nine saves on goal in the Westbury game and 20 saves'in the West Hempstead game.
