Under the-proposed 1990»I99I budget for Nassau^Communiiy Ccllcge. which has been submitted to the Board of Supervisors, taxpayers will receive a lax cut of S3 million, according to County Exccuti^ Thomas S. Gulotta. Despite increased Coks, this budget, which will provide the funds necessary • to educate an estimated 21,S(X) full time and part-time students, cuts taxes for every County homeowner by $3 million or $6 per homeowner. Without jeopardizing the quality of education at Nassau Community, this proposed budget represents a further step in continuing efforts to provide real property tax relief for bomeowneis and taxpayers. In J a n u ^ of (his year, the 19W County budget cut taxes by $15 million resulting in an average reduction of $25 per hbmeowoer. More recently, property tax relief for senior citizens been expanded. “On June 13, the College Board of Trustees had submitted a proposed hold the line budget which retained approximately four million in surplus revenue. This was unacceptable to me,** Mr. Gulotta said. “Priority attention must be placed on reducing the tax burden for our residents in every manner possible. That four milHoQ belongs to our taxpayers and is being Tciurncd as a tax cut. The surplus accrued as the result of revenues derived from an unanticipated increase in sludcrils and related fees. This is a credit to the college’s outstanding reputation and adminisinilion.“ According to Mr. .Gulotta, while the County only controls 22 percent of the real property taxes paid by homeowners, (the balance being school. district and other local taxes) it is extremely important that every effort is exerted to control costs and reduce that portion at every opportunity. Real property lax relief will permit senior citizens to remain in the County, will encourage young people to live here, will reduce burdens on middle income taxpayers and will help to stimulate the economy. Our taxpayers and homeowners deserve and need real property tax relief. **We are beginning to break the back of the real property taxes under County ccxiiroL TCs budget rqjrcscms another step in that direction,\ Mr. Gulotta concluded. .
