i «* Power, pools are topics at Board meeting n o u> An argumcniaiivc public meeting before the Board of Trustees bfonday night touched on topics ranging from various aspects of the power generation issue to Martin Luther King Park plans. Roland Savage, a member of the P.O.W.E.R. group which opposes the villagers future generation plans, demanded to know on what authority Mayor Dorothy Storm ruled several months ago that speakers be limited to fiN’C minutes at public meetings. ‘‘Government should not try to limit the amount of information available to the people,** he said, promising that “in coming weeks we*rc going to show you democracy in aclipn. We won’t be shut up. We’ll get our message to the people on the power issue.” Nlayor Storm retorted that she had made the ruling as Ma>-or of the vilbge under the open meetings bw. Vincent Campion, also a P.O.W.E.R. member, asked how the vilbge selected its consultants, specifically referring to O'Brien and Gere, the engineering consultants who prepared the study upon which the village’s plan to construct additional generation at Power Pbnt 2 was based. Mr. Campion said a national engineering review stated that the firm’s work was primarily in hazardous waste removal, sewage and sanitation, with only one percent of its w'ork being in the field of electric power. Mayor Storm responded that consultants arc selected who are “well known in their fields,” and that O’Brien and Gere had been utilized by the Municipal Electric Utilities Assoc> iation. Mr. Campion also appeared to question the qualifications of General V e ts facility for Lydia Hall? The suggested transformation of Lydb Hall Hospital to a Veteran’s care facility will be the subject of a Freeport Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting at the Vfcst Wind Yacht Club Tuesdaj^ May 15, at 12:30 p.m. The' public is welcome to atbnd. Village Clerk Karen Navin said the title and job classification had been approved by Nassau County Civil* Service,' and Mayor Storm defended Mr. Cominos'as “highly qualified, with or without the cn^nccring degree.” P.O.W.E.R. members told The Leader they plan to file a formal complaint with the County’s Civil Service Commission bn the basis of the description of Mr. Cominos* duties and testimony they said \shows he doesn't have all the qualifications.for the position he holds.” hir. Campion also asked about the status of the Martin Luther King Park pools and was told by the Mayor that no report had been receive from the volunteer citizens committee studying the future of the pools there. Louise Simpson said the chairman of the committee was from South Freeport and maintained that committee members “should have been people from the area concerned.” Also raised were concerns about Sunday parking on Pine Street during services at Our Holy Redeemer ^ d the future of commercial fishermen on WOodcIcfi Avenue; On the latter subject.
