Siu Ng's Bayview Avenue School first graders wrote an eliciting finale to their “Big Book” program last w^eek' after they met one of the Air Force.pen; pals who helped them write the bixik . during a special stopover at MacArthur Airport. • Captain Sandy Krigel, once a Freeport student himself who along with 10 other instructor pilots from Vance Air Force Base has been corresponding with the youngsters since last October, made special aiT^gements with^is;coIonel to land his jet at NfacArihur last Wednesday and spend an unforgettable day with his liltic friends. ■. ' The 28-year-old capt^n, a 1981 Freeport High School graduate who was captain of the football team and a mcmb<i of the wrestling team, arrived in Bayview Room 104 early Wednesday morning, and after talking with the children and letting each bne in turn w’car his helmet, boarded a bus with them for the ride to the Airport; There the students saw firsthand - Captain Krigel’s plane and' others they had learned about in letters from the pilots and compared his jet to a AT MACARTHUR AIRPORT to meet their pentyl, Captain Sandy Krigel. also a pal of the FFO aixl an honorary m e ^ r of Engine Co. 1. are Bayview Avenue youngsters, who spent an exciting day inspecting jet engines and ftre engines. They enjoyed a “picnic lunch” of heroes on the carpeted floor of an airport lounge and that night saw themselves on the television news. They were also able to relive the whole experience in their classroom via a video filmed by assistant teacher Natalie Stammcl. Opportunity for learning. The children’s particular “Big Book” story began when Captain Krigel, first grader Jenny Villalba’s' uncle, told Ms. Ng he and his fellow pilot instructors would like to correspond with her class. Freeport's honored represented nearly a third of the entire County contingent of honorecs based upon fire related incidents during caicnto year 1989. “We view this ceremony as an official means to recognize those firefighters who have gone above and beyond the call of duty,” n o t^ County Executive TTibmas $.
