Licata Freeport Mayor Dorothy Storm refused to comment on a statement presented lo the board of inisiccs on Monday night by the spokesman for the Freeport Council of Civic Associations, except 19 say that it was a distorted view of the electric power situation in Freeport and would need further review by the board as they had hot seen the statement prior to the meeting. • The seven page document presented to the board at their regular meeting criticized the local government’s policies, and suggested that the board and government officials, through \distortion misrepresentation, or the deliberate concealing of facts and or evidence...\ have overlooked appropriate .solutions to Freeport’s ■ power problems. William Cominos. General Manager of Electrical Utilities, responded to the document by calling it \propaganda.\ Mr. Cominos defended the plans to phase out the older number-one* plant and upgrade the number-two plant lo provide more efficient use of personnel, and more efficient power generation. old equipment to be increased- maintenance costs, decreased reliability, increased operating costs, and future unavailability of manufxiurcr support. Mr. Cominos stated that operating two plants requires a duplication of ' staff and supplies, and maintained that consolidation.-would reduce the village’s fixed operating cost A document from the Village of Freeport tilled Bulk Power Aliemaiivcs notes that decommissioning ihc.plani \would allow the property to be developed, providing additional lax revenues to the Village,\ Mr Cominos said that the upgrading of plant number-two is necessary because at times of high demand LILCO. will cut its power supply to— Freeport, and without additional resources Freeport may be unable to handle the cut. The upgrading, he said, wOuld provide revenue to the .village . through the sale of power to LII,CO during peak demand periods.'
