But during the last five j'ears, once becoming severe ly handicapped with emphy sema, he has become a home- bound patrem. A homebound patron is usxudly a handicapped Free port resident who exmnot get to the Ubroiy on his own. He takes advantage of the Ubrary*s Homebound DcUv- ery Service of books end other Library materials. lb take advantage of this service, someone, or the handicapped patron, must call the Library to request what is wanted. Many of the Library's homebound patrons ask to speak to Vivian Mon aghan, the Library’s Home- bound Representative. Mrs. Monaghan is friendly and outspoken and knowledge able of the the Library’s resources for the handi capped. It was during one of his telephone calls th a t Mrs. Monaghan discovered Albert is a wood carver. He carves sailing boats, animals, devils and dinosaurs, and at one time did scrimshaw. Albert said he would send Mrs. Monaghan some photos of his wot \ l UpMi seeing the quali ty of h is work, Mrs. Mon- tighan suggested that ma>‘bo Mr. Ethier would like to dis play his carvings in the Chil dren's Room. D u ring the month of November, Albert Ethier’s hand-carved animals and sailing ships will bo exhibited in the gloss display case in the Children’s Room of the Library'. Albert Ethicr has been a resident of Freeport for more than 25 years, is 62 years old, and has served his coun try twice - during World War 11 a n d during the Koreon Conflict — a s a Pharmacist Mate in the U.S. Navy. Albert started wood carv ing about 18 years ago when he was a security guard at Freeport High School. In order to keep busy, when all was quiet, he started whit tling away and discovered he was quite good at it. It has become a fulBUingbobby now that he is handicapped. The hobby fills his days and his 11-year-old grandson helps by roughing out the wood on a bandsaw. Ihe Ethiers have 10 grandchildren who have enjoyed their grandfather’s carvings. During the Christ m as holidays he presents each child with a special carved ornam ent which becomes a keepsake. Their favorites are G a r n d d , dinosaurs and devils. 'Ihis is the perfect opportu niQr to bring your children u> the Library. They can see Albert’s animals and take oui a book or two. It might be a good time to sign up for one of the many on-going pro grams in the Children s Room. Call the Children's Room at 379-3274 for further information.
