Sharing historical memories in Long Beach Regina Feeney and Mary Kane of the Freeport Historical Society represented Freeport during a dedication of a marker on the boardwalk in Long Beach. The marker commemorates the wreck of the ship The Mexico, which was wrecked near Long Beach on January 2, 1837. Kane holds an image of Freeporter, Cap- tain Raynor Rock Smith, who along with his sons dragged his board from Raynor- town now, Freeport, across the bay in an attempt to save the ship's passengers and crew. Tragically, 112 people, most of whom were Irish immigrants, died. The victims are buried in a mass grave in the Rockville Cemetery In 1975, the village dedicated the Freeport Recreation Center as the Raynor Rock Smith building.
