An academic close encounter Students chat with space station crew member By NADYA NATALY nnataly@liherald.com Adisa Johnson was as excited as if he'd just walked on the moon. \I still can't believe that I spoke to an astronaut on the [Internation- al Space Station],\ the 15-year- old Freeport High School stu- dent said, taking a deep breath. He was one of 10 students from the Freeport Public Schools who were given the opportunity to ask questions of astronaut Scott Tingle aboard the space station on March 27, during a session in the school's Performing Arts Center. Tingle is also a U.S. Navy captain, and an alum- nus of Southeastern Massa- chusetts University and Pur- due University The Freeport district was one of 13 across the country chosen by NASA to chat with astronauts aboard the ISS. Freeport's session lasted 10 minutes, while the astronauts were orbiting over Africa. The students asked a total of 15 questions. The students selected to ask Tingle questions took part in a districtwide essay contest in which they detailed an astronomy research topic of their choice and proposed a question they wanted to ask the astronaut. Before Tingle connected with the students, Dr. Mary Anne DeVivio, the district's assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 ^••^•••••^•^^•••••^^^•••••^•••••••••••••••••^•iMMMMBMMHMMMl^BMMMiaMMIIIIM Cheer squad leaps to a top U.S. ranking W By NADYA NATALY nnataly@liherald.com The Freeport High School cheerleading team tumbled, twirled and danced its way into the school's history books by earning a ranking of 22nd in the nation this season, while winning ^^^^^ m titles and accolades at the county and state levels along the way \Every competi- tion was leading into the next,\ said coach Laurie Kolodny On Feb. 25, the squad won the Small Division I cheerleading com- petition at Want- agh High School, earning a trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Cheerlead- ing Championship in Syracuse on March 3. There, FHS placed fifth. Seniors Erin Dean, 17, Emily Peralta, 17, and Katherine Leon, 18, sat down last week after their busy season to reflect on all that the squad had accomplished this year. The three started cheering e couldn't have asked for anything more. It was a fairy- tale season. LAURIE KOLODNY Freeport cheerleading coach at J.W Dodd Middle School, and six years later they were mem- bers of the first Freeport squad to attend the National High School Cheerleading Champion- ship at Walt Disney World — the most prestigious cheerleading competition in the country — on Feb. 10 and 11. ^^^^^ m \Every expecta- tion we had, they surpassed it,\ said assistant cheer- leading coach Chrissy Frisco. \They didn't just meet it, they sur- passed it from Day One.\ While at the NHSCC, the girls qualified in Group B for the semi- finals. They did not make the finals, but came away ranked among the top 25 teams in the country \They rocked,\ Kolodny said. \They went to nationals hitting three routines.
