Brooks of Seaford has proposed legislation that would redirect mil- lions of dollars generated by an assessment fee on Uber and Lyft trips, to help Long Island transit, possibly including the resto- ration of local route cuts to NICE bus ser- vice. Brooks and his colleague, Assembly- woman Christine Pellegrino (D-West Islip, Babylon and Oyster Bay), co-sponsored the legislation that would channel about $24 million in fees from prearranged trip servic- es, toward improvements locally on the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) and local buses. \Investing ridesharing dollars into local transit will enhance bus and LIRR service and allow for overdue infrastructure improvements,\ Brooks said. \Redirecting the existing 4 percent assessment fee, which is projected to generate $24 million in reve- nue, will substantially strengthen local bus routes and commuter rail service across New York.\ The bill redirects an existing 4 percent assessment fee on all transportation net- work companies (TNC) from the General Fund back to local transit operating accounts that will help localities strengthen and improve existing local transit sys- tems. The legislation only applies to TNC fees generated outside of the City of New York and does not impose any new taxes or fees. It includes a provision that prevents counties or municipalities from using col- lected TNC funds to reduce their annual operating payments to local transit systems, ensuring that this additional funding is not SEN. JOHN BROOKS of Seaford, and Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino, were at the Massapequa LIRR Train Station on March 1 to gather support for their legisla- tion, which re-directs fees from prear- ranged trip services, such as Uber and Lyft, toward improvements in local transit. offset by reduced state or local assistance. The assessment fee comes from a 50-cent surcharge on the ride-share services Lyft or Uber whenever they are used in the county. \The bottom line is: money spent on Long Island should stay on Long Island,\ added Brooks. The legislation can be viewed here: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/ bills/2017/S7437. Currently the bill is in the Senate Investigations and Government Operations Committee. -EdenLaikin TRUNKSHOW Thursday March 22nd, 2018 Oceanside Location 3175 Long Beach Rd Oceanside, NY 11572 516-678-1150 Friday March 23rd, 2018 Merrick Location 2165 Merrick Rd Merrick, NY 11566 516-623-5772 www.temptationsforher.com temptation* •*7, . f O * M t IT Style * Personal Service«Selection Women's Contemporary Sportswear & Accessories
