Recalling Red Devils' memorable season by Chris Re I was asked by The Leader to write something about the 1988 version of the Freeport High school Football Team. I felt that to write a complete and fair arti cle, I would have to approach'this subject from three angles. First from the fan's standpoint, second from a Freeport resident^ stand point, and finally from the stand point of one who played the game at'Freeport in the early 70's and later on in college. As a fan, the Freeport football team provided many memorable moments, starting with opening day against Farmingdale. As anyone who was there could tell you, Freeport slugged it out with what proved to be one of the county's toughest team s. Although down at halftime, this team fought back. As the stand ard Vince Lombardi line goes, “We didn't lose, we just ran out of time.\ It took a controversial call on an onside kick tq stop the momentum of FHS. Freeport's qolden link only three regular season losses all came at home against Nassau Powers: Farmingdale, Massape- ' qua and Hempstead. The Farm ingdale and half of the Hemp stead games were great: aggressive and hard hitting. I firmly believe that mistakes and penalties cost Freeport thest two games. As a resident of Freeport, I'm ecstatic that the FHS football program has turned the comer. I think that a playoff contender, which we were in 1988, it good for the community. I personally have only missed a handful of games in the last five years. 1 can attest that the crowds are swelling and the enthusiasm is growing. A FHS home game on a Saturday is a virtual Who's Who in Freeport. 'Alums from as far back as thd 'Mk congregate at these games. This year a special day was set aside to honor the 1969 Rutgers Cup Team. 1 enjoyed teeing and meeting guys 1 looked up to at a Junior High Student. The Rick- enbacker Brothers, Nunenkamp, Patronagio, Silkie and many more. Over twenty players from that squad show^ up and enjoyed the festivities that started with a pancake breakfast at tended by over 500 people. Asa resident, the FHS football pro gram had a positive effect on this commumty. As another Vince Lombardi line goes, “winning ‘u contagious.\ Finally, as an ex-jock, T enjoyed this football season mote than any of the most recent sea sons. Maybe it's because I was close to several of the players. I don't think that Freeport's return to the status of playoff contender and the fact that an off-season summer weight-training program (rantinued an pagt 19) .
