It responds to such things as a bettor's inquiry to verify who won the wager, someone engaged fn Trivial Pursuits wanting to know some statistic about some minutia, or a researcher in q mat ter of life and death.- They will never go wrong by asking the FM L . J The library has a vast amount of published works, fro m ' the latest best-seller to classic and ancient literature, to ,be perused in one of the reading ropriis or borrowed for home reading. Us computers, encyclopedias, refer ence books and catalogues offer a wealth of information. But the greatest treasures are in the minds of the library's experienced per sonnel, headed by Mrs. Anita G o rd o n o f the R e ference Services. “Our high degree of success,” M rs. Gordon told-us with obvious pride, “in supplying the right information is due to the gence. T h e y know the and how to tap them.\ . The Reference Section is alsoa training ground for Freeport High School students who work for the F M L between 12 and 16 hours a week and acquire greater love for learning, a higher sense of responsibility and a zeal for service.to fellow humans. ' A law student preparing for an interview with a judge with the objective of becoming a law clerk, a thrill-seeker who wants the nearest, safest and least expensive balloon ride, a couple who walk the Jones Beach boardwalk want to know its exact Ibngth, prospec-’ tive parents of two children they are going to adopt looking for after school care for the lOand 12 year olds, a movie fan needing the identity o f a character Irrarecent T V show named “Tondyelo,\ ail And theiranswers. So do a patron who wants to know the signifi cance and origin of the interlock ing ring's o f the Olympics logo, a researcher needing facts about the womens’ suffrage mdvement other arid diirerse queries. Many high school equivalency' candidates seek much informa tion, as do people interested in Einstein's Theory of Relativity, \Black Holes,\ the ori^n of brewing beer, electro-plating and the history of the world’s reli gions. None leaves. Freeport , Library empty-handed. M rs. Gordon stresses the advantages of F M L in that it seeks out and hires competent people with good prospects who remain o.n the staff and thereby give the library patrons the benefit of their increased knowl edge and experience. Anita Gor don herself started as a trainee at' F M L and simultaneously took a 36-credit graduate course in library, science, which she com pleted in 197S.
