Well, the first report on Boys* arsity Basketball isn’t that good. Freeport’s hoopsters traveled to Farmingdale on December 16 for' their season opener, and came away 84-73 losers to a very tough opponent. On the “ plus” side of the game was the spectacular debut of Freeport junior Anthony Jones'- Jones scored 26 points, hitting on 13 of his 19 shots^^and led the Red Devils in rebounds by pulling ^w n 10 off the back- boards. Right behind Jones was Louis Anderson, who scored 17 points and accounted' for eight rebounds. Eugene Fuller, point guard, had a perfect game, hitting 4-for-4 from the floor. Getting off to a cold start, Freeport trailed Farmingdale by *24 points midway through the game. However hustle and determination enabled them to close that gap to nine points, at 75-66. which was the closest the Devils were able to get to the lead. Freeport goes to Hempstead on Wednesday. December 30. to second in the annual Sprig Gardner VVrestling Tournament over the weekend. Sachem High School won the team champion ship. Freeport's Mike Franklin not only won his weight class championship but also was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. Andre Cox won another championship and was presented with a trophy for the most number of pins in the shortest time ' ^riod. Other Freeport winners includted Andy Boyd and Sam Boone. The Freeport Winter Track team’s mile relay team of Earl Gamble. Lovell Riddle, Biyon Daily and Vic Mooney turned in a 3:52.28 time. The 2-mile relay team of James Bessel. Steven Barry. Tim Carroll and James Miller were timed at 9:52.79. Paced by Tom O’Brien and Dave McAndrews. Freeport’s varsity Swim team defeated Herricks. 90-58. O’Brien won the lOO-yard Butterfly in 1:02.4 and the lOO-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:08.7. McAndrews won the Diving event with a total score of 77,65. O’Brien’s victory in the Butterfly, coupled with Kieran Molloy’s second place finish. HONORED. In the only shut-out of the ■ night, the seventh place Jaguars defeated the third place Tigers, 11-0. Joe Bonacora helped the winners with a 209 game and 540 series while his teammate. Tom Ba^alone topped everyone in the match with a 216 game and 563 series. The losers received a 535 • series from Ernest Porter, a 512 series from John Dauro and a 510, series by Roger Herrmann. The fourth place Eagles topped the Rams by a 7-4 score to drop the losers one peg X q sixth place even while they were setting that new Team High Game. Richard Olson's 201 game in a 542 series; and Chuck Miguel’s 215 in a 540 series were (top scores for the winners. The Rams got a 547 series from Many Aurigemma, a 203 game and 542 series by Pete Bivona. a 208^^539 by Rocky suffered shut-out losses to their competitors. The Hawks took dn the Bobcats and the Bobcats were 11-0 victors over the current league leaders. Don Houghton of the Bobcats rolled an impressive 212-507 to pace his team. Don Navin of the Hawks bowled his'third over-225 game, a 230, to go with his 559 series, to keep the Hawks close throughout the evening. The Lions, who have been in a mild slump lately, broke out with a big 11-0. win over the second place Falcons. Tom Pomerico’s 504 series led the Lions, who moved back into contention, only six points olf the pace and up two notches in the standings to third. The Orioles held on to fourth place with an 8-3 victory over the Vultures. The Orioles are two points behind the third place Lions in the once-again-tight first division. *The surprising Rams continue to work their way back up in the Standings again, this time with an 11-0 victory over the-Eagles. The Rams have moved up four places to sixth over the last three weeks. The*eleventh place Birds have found their winning ways lately, taking an 8-3 victory from the Bears. Bob Notheis kept the sixth place Bears in contention with a 204-509 for the night’s actiom The tenth place Habs took a 6-5 decision from the cellar-dwelling Thundefbirds.
