I had received a letter ^ r a the publicity- reps of the Freeport Fire Department asking for some. air time to' publicize - the , department’s, upcoming parade and drill in Freeport (fonnerly held each year during the weekend after Labor Day). . I was glad to help out a focal group,' and I remember calling the publicity reps to have them come in and rerord some special public service announcements. A year later (1971), the depart ment was again looking for help. from WGBB to publicize the event. And, once again, 1 was contacted by the publicity com mittee for help. At the same time, my family was in the process of moving into our first home...io fact, it was a Saturday morning, and we were surveying from room to room the Cape Cod style home we had just bought, trying to figure out where to start: Sudden~ - understand, ly a knock at the door, and standing there was this same publicity rep from the Freeport, Fire Department.-We invited him in and he proceeded to survey the home with us and give us some excellent suggestions for im proving the house. 1 had rarely in my life met an individual- who seemed so anxious to help, and was also so knowledgeable about virtually any subject. now, the ‘ ‘publicity rep\ I refer to was ’.‘Fireman Jim” McBride. It was five years ago this Monday that the FFD lost a man who was, perhaps, its greatest member.,, and oiir world lost a deeply respected and , loved human being. I have known' few, if any individuals who touched so many lives.in.as positive a way as Jim McBride did. . To say Jim was a \man for all. seasons” as Father Donovan described Jim at the emotional service at Holy Redeemer in 1976, is even an understatement. I can say, with confidence, that I don’t believe I have ever met as caring an individual in my lifetime: On behalf of the Freeport Rre Department, personal w d departmental memories will flow in-an emotional way this. Mon- day...and if Jim’s home company (215) Hahn pumper seenu to have a tear in the headlight this Monday, we’re sure everyone will Participants wilt begin a ten- mile walk at 10 am at a starting. point in jCow Meadow Park, South Main Street in Freeport.
