Living space is on the second level and contains a living room, two •bedrooms and, natrjrally,, a music room. The rear of the house may be viewed-ftom across Woodcleft Canal^ ; where one caii see the boat slips under the house where Lombardo kept his famous Tempo speedboats. Also to be viewed is the svfimmihg pool, a favorite home to the ducks of Woodcleft Canal. 112 Lena Avenoe , At least 100 years old, this Victorian is presently undergoing renovations by its new owners. The house has 14 rooms on three levels, three fireplaces, gaslight fixtures, oak floors, a vridow's wa'k and bam. Its sale was handled by the Freeport Homefinders Service, Advertised in \Old House Journal,’’ inquiries were received from through out the nation. 421 Archer Street This Tudor style home was built by Mae West u,id her sister and' it is rumored that W.C. Fields was a frequent guest. Staiiding on one-half acre, the step remains near the portico where carriages stopped. The house features a large fireplace, butler pantry, upstairs drawing room, beamed ceilings and the original oak panelling. Many present day Freeporters remember going to the house each Christmas when Mae West hosted a party for the neighborhood children. 136 North Ocean Avenue This house was built by Jacob Post, a leading real estate developer in Freeport at the turn of.the century. . (see 92 Lena Avenue). It has a double- - faced fireplace between the living room ' and wrap-around porch. It is noted for its diamond lites (window!). The down stairs boasts beamed ceilings and the . original cherrywood panelling with a surrounding_eye level mantle. It has four' bedtt»ms, a butler pantry and skylight. This house was boarded up for many years.Jt was recently rehabili tated and occupied through the Vil lage’s Homesteading program. 700 South Long Beach Avenue Fifty-six years ago, the (Joldfaibs, heirs to millions gained as the sole manufacturers of artificial flowers at that time,. travelled to Mexico where 51 Saynbr Street This house originally stood on South Main Street. Scheduled for demolition for the construction of-a bank,\ it was purchased and moved to its present location some 10 years ago. Its age is unknown but the fact that it is quite old is indicated by the crooked chimney to keep the witches out. ~710 Guy Lombardo Avc This was the home of famed orchestra leader, Guy Lombardo, until his death. His widow, Lillibelle, still resides in the Mrs. Goldfarb fell in love with a house of Moorish design. Her husband engaged the architect and had him reproduce the house in Freeport. Mrs. Goldfarb fell ill and never lived in it and it was sold to film actor Victor Moore. Moore lived in it with Rosa Campanilii and entertained lavishly making good use of his private pro- - jection room. The house, now under going renovation, has 14 rooms and a three bedroom ‘’lighthouse’’guest ' cottage, with 178-feet of wateitont. Unique in the Village, the owners have the rights to the waterbed and cmuld fill it in to extend the land area. The living room has a marble floor and replicas of . the fountain of Turtles of Rome are ^.foiiriH-hnlh insifie a n d out. This is the tallest private house in Freeport and Point Lookout can be seen from the upper level. WATBBFRONT LIVING Is exemplified by the home of lamed bandleader/ camposer/produeer Guy Lombardo, whose beautiful white house and swiming pool are on Woodcleli Avenue. While Lombardo, known as \Mr. Freeport\ by his village admirers, died several years ago. his wile still lives in the house on the street that has been renamed Guy Lombardo Avenue. BBFOHB AND AFTER. F'reepOrl'was lor many years the shopping hub ot the South Shore of Nassau Chunly and both people and vehicular traffic flowed north and south on South Main Street between Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway: In the top picture, the photographer is looking south from Sunrise Highway, with Chubbucks and the tour-story Olive Building an the east corner. They're still there, as are several ol the other stores seen. But the cars are gone as Main Street (In bottom photo) was closed oft to trafti'c and ar Mall was developed.
