Marion Harvie Photography: Cartoons: Stall Writers: ROUND-ABOUT With Rhoda Editorial Members of elected legislative bodies sitting in open public sessions occasionally have to “ sufTcT” through long, oftimes abusive discourses by self-seeking residents or taxpayers. Fortunately in Freeport the public rarely abuses its democratic right of addressing its elected officials. In fact, we found the various public meet ings on rent stablization excellent examples of democracy in action. Both sides, landlords and tenants, were able to present their views and the Village Board invited a member of the New York State Department of Housing to be present to answer questions on the workings of the Emergency Tenants Protection Act. People applauded their favorite side, but except for a few \catcalls'* from the audi ence. emotion took second place to reason. Perhaps that is why this past Monday flight's public meeting grated oar sensibili ties. We have been present when Whitey Carlson, former owner of the Grove Theatre and present owner of the boarded-up Free port Theatre, appeared before the Village Board. We have been present uncountable rimes frhen Girfsoo. la aa eatremefy dramatic and embtiboal maoner.'accused the Board of depriving him of his property by unfair taxation. We have been p r ^ n t when, time, after time. Mayor William H. White and ' vQIa^ counsel expUihed that the matter was - in iidgation. Carlson, who bought both theatres when they-were-empty. h u continually objected to the taxes he has had to pay on t h ^ « One theatre he never .opened but sold to a non tax paying Church; the^econd he opened for a short while as \On Stage.\ a disco-ci«us. The right or wrong of Carlson's claims, for lower taxes will be decided in a court of law. The village is represented by an attorney; presumably so was Carlson — although Mon day night he intimated that he no longer had legal counsel in that case. What we can comment on as wrong, from our experiences covering various elected Boards! is Carlson's attitude toward this village’s elected repre sentatives. From his condescending way of addressing the village's Deputy Mayor, chairing the meeting, as \dear.\ to his refusal to sit down and give other taxpayers an opportunity to address the Board if they so desire, Carlson showed a disdain for this village and its people. Storm, never loosing her cool, outplayed the showman by calling a five-minute recess. She never lost control of the meeting. WE WERE SADDENED this week to learn of the death of UUJAN \ GLASER, whose place ia Freeport’s past and p r t ^ n t wUI always be remembered in the future. Our fondest memories of UllUn were dur ing the 1976. Lillian died early this week. There will be no replacement for that grand old lady, but all those who knew her will pay tribute. There will be no public funeral service, but plans for a memorial service will be announced later.
