Qvic Gnxip Otea \ Traffic Problem . Represented by. its president Ken BxgxtcUe, th^ Northwest Civic Association asked the board to consider one-sidc of the street parking for North Ocean Avenue between Randall and Seaman Avenues. They cited the narrow ness of the street and the hea >7 trafTic flow as reasaons for their request. Trustee Jim Clark, explaining, that he had often driven fire trucks down that street as a volunteer firemaii. called in a “ good four way street.\ Anotber Cab Faze Hike? Representing the cab drivers rather than the company — this time — attorney Bernard Levy asked the board to approve a , oon-mandaloiy 104 per ride sur charge for cab passengers. He and two Cannon cab drivers noted that while they recenilv received a rate increase (which went into effect about one week ago), gasoline prices had in creased tremendously since they had First applied for it (in October) and haa received it. The increase just received was shared equally between the cab company and the drivers. Gasoline for the cabs, however, is purchased by the driver. Village counselMichael Solo- mon confirmed the Mayor’s opinion that it would not be legal for the Board to vote on the surcharge. . They suggested that Levy would have to submit a request for another rate In crease. But cab driver Dolores Mitchell explained. “ If you were to increase the fares then Cannon benefits, not the drivers.” Trustee AI Sirlin noted that Levy could ask for an increase of 104 per ride and turn that amount over to the drivers. . Help For Yoolb Carence Harris, of Harris Street, asked the Mayor to request the Town of Hempstead arrange for field visits to sign up >-outns for summer jobs. In the past, applications were received at local schools, but a recent con solidation attempt bought the program into Hempstead. Other ’ communities do have field visits, and White promised to write a letter on the matter. Harris, also asked that the Board of Trustees meet with and communicate with the black and Hispanic community to discuss matters of mutual concern. Harris told THE LEADER that he is working with a group attempting to activate a civic assoaation in the northeast part of the Village. White suggested that the group form first and then ask individual trustees or mem bers of the administration to meet with them.
