We’ve become such fast Wends that It’s hard to believe wc only ' met eight months ago. At that time, my set had lost Us color and the picture was jiggling, so I called my ffiehd Wanda and she recom mended “ Sparky” quite highly. When 1 called his shop, someone explained that a house call cost SIS but if I brought the set in 1 would only have to pay for repalre. • v Well. 1 have a large unit; It weighs about l.(XX) pounds, so I chose the house call. When “ Sparky” arived, the first thing I noticed was his sad brown eyes. He glanced at the TV and I knew.,.I was in big trouble. “ Tsk, tsk. An old set, eh lady?”, “ Gee, eight years doesn't seem old tom e ,” 1 answered. “ Well, do you want a regular check-up, where I leave the back of the set intact and just shine a flashlight through the little holes; or do you want the deluxe job, where I risk my life by removing the back panel and checking all the tubes?\ “ Deluxe it. After all it’s never broken down before.’’ That answer was mistake because as soon as I gave him this bit of information, he told me most of the tubes were half-shot. He even invited me to inspect the back of the set just to prove he was telling the truth. Sparky made a lot of small talk, asking a lot of questions. ■ - “ How many kids do you have. Mrs. Broems?” “ Five,”.! answered. “ No wonder your TV is so overworked.” he said. “ I ’ll bet it’s in use night and day. Jhad better testihe picture tube.” Sparky went out to his truck and came back in. sad-eyed and bent. “ Why is your body all out of shape. Sparky?” ‘.'This tester we use weighs a ton. I ’ m a young man and look at my posture from being in this lousy business.” “ Gee, I ’m sony. I didn’t want to bend you. All I wanted was to . have my.set repaired,” I thought maybe I ’d take his mind off his problems...\Does >-our wife work?” “ Oh, yes. she’s a very succcssful lawycr and she works out of an office in our home back In Beverly Hills. The servants get away with murder when no ones at the house. ’ ’ Feeling inadequate, I blabbed out that 1 was ^writer. \Gee that’s great,” he said, frantically unwrapping tube after tube. “ I hear people that write make a bundle.” “ Will you keep your big mouth shut, woman?” I thought to my-/ self. “ Every time you open it, it’s costing more money.” ” Oh, by the way.” the repairman asked, “ how did you know 1 was married?” ^ , !'Oh* that was. easy., I. noticed your diamond wedding band.; I've nevtf seen one quite like it.” ' . “ , “Then* I guess you noticed my knuckles all twisted on that finger? I was trying to.remove a VR76 that was jammed,” he explained. “ This is a dangerous business, lady. “ Yeah, 1 know. VYe went through this before. Sparky. By the way do you own the shop?” ’ ‘‘Me? No, 1 just work' for the owner and i f you knew what that cheapskate paid me bythe hour. you*d laugh.” “ Oh. brotherl Nowr-1 have to tip him because he doesn’t make a decent living;*'1 thought. “ The h e ^ with this,”. —I went to the hamper and removed 14 pair of dirty dungarees. “ Excuse me please, but while you’re working, I have to do this wash. 1 promised tny neighbors that 1 would have their riothes washed and • dried by 5 pm. I work as a laundress just to make a few extra dollars sbj can buy^my children sneakers.” Sneaking out of the lau a ^ .r o o m , I then phoned.Wanda. ” Hcy* • are you kidding me about thi^guy? I ’m afraid to hsk what he’s going to charge and he still hasn’t even tested the picture tube.\ • “ How a n waS'he when he came in Marilyn?” she asked.. ___ _ “ About five-seven, 1 guess. But what difference does that make?” “ It matters a great deal,” she explained, ‘ ‘When he starts off in the morning he really stands six feet two. The ino’rc he gets h^seled, ' out lubes of even the boxes they come in I trust you and will leave the repairs In your.capable hands. ;Tears filled Sparl^'s eyes and he started to remove the new tubes and replace them with the old ones saying over and over: “ This one isn’t really that bad.” My plan had worked.
