(EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the story o f a North Main Street bakery, owned by members o f the Price family fo r a long time starting in 1921. and its neighborhood) CONTINUED FROM lA S T WEEK I asked Seymour J . Price, son of David, about two red brick chimneys towering over an addition to the back end of 176 North Main Street. He said this new part was constructed in the cariy 1930s. Seymour linked the expansion date to the widening of Main Street by Nassau County. Why did he connect those two projects in determin ing one date for both? Donation of frontage for a road right-of-way to the County in 1930 ment that the Prices would need to quit using one of their ovens — it was located, of all places, underneath the proposed road’s right-of-wayl In order to stay in business the owners set up two new ovens at the back of the building, one of them replacing the older one in front that couldn't be used any longer. The bay window, installed for the Price family’s second floor apart ment, still overlooks Dean Street. In 1923, tenants who occupied other apanments included Alfred Ensenbach. a carpenter: E liza^th Ritchie, the widow of Charles; William Paget, a taximan; Samuel Roceo; and H a ^ ’ Warshow. The bakery’s name changed from Warshow and • Price to Price Brothers, and later to Star Baking Company, Exactly when the corner building was constructed is not known. Cerelia Smith c f Baldwin estimates tha) it was erected tn about I9l2, as she saw the structure before her father, William, sold his farm north of it. Maps .drawn in 1906 show that the site remained a heavily w ooded area then, without the roads that now run eastward off Main Street Peter Elar, former police chief, recalls that the com er structure was already built when he became a patrolman in 1917. I found in the County O erk’s office in Mineola. a document showing that a baker was supposed to occupy part of the property as early as h^omrtino A Roskow owncd it. But Henry L. Himmel, the Ortober 31 Prospective tenant, was listed in the 1923-24 directory at a South Main n S d ? u ^ o V address close to the Himmel famUy bakciy.
