The B e e tle 's \bigger brothers\'-the newly designated 412 two-and four-door sedan and 12 station wagon-have also been provided with a new look for 1973, having been given, for want of a better description, a \nose job\ thal makes them appear more- streamlined than previous mode^-:jji the Type 4 line. The most of the changes on the 412s fall Into the area of technical improvements and include in creased computer diagnosis capabilities, a nickel-plated muffler for longer life, modified camsiuift timing for a smooteer idle and longer-lasting disc brakes with tiiicker .brake pads. The 412 models are available with a four-speed manual transmission in two door models and a three-speed automatic in four-doors and station wagons. An automatic transmission-as an option-is also available for the flrst time on VW's bus-shaped seven or nine-passenger station wagon models which, for 1973, feature restyled turn signals, enlarged fresh air and heater outlets that provide for better comfort and defrosting, im proved intake air pre-heating . systems and improv^ starting Heat restraint fittings into all its 1973 station wagon models which, because of their new optional automatic transmissions, may become more popular than ever. Comparatively unchanged- VW, by its own admission, has never made changes for the sake of change but only to improv^or enhance its products-are the classic Karmann Ghia and the Type 3 series of fastback sedans and squareback \mini-wagon\ models. But while they outwardly appear the same as before, they sight\ share many of the \out of s ^ improvements that have been engineered into VW‘s other 1973 m^els.
