Readers may wonder where the long-neglected park site got its name. James Haose, a can didate for Village President (Mayor) in 1912, urged that the millpond be converted to public use. After his election - in a People’s Party contest against incumbent John D. Gunning, 646 to and in the general election without organized opposition a proposal for creation of Hanse Park was turned down by the people, 171 Yes to 206 No votes. Evidently tajq»yera were in favor of small annual Village budgets like the one they had; only $37,640 and two cents, based on a tax rate of 89 cents per $100 assessed valuation! Hanse did not run for re- election the next year, but Free porters found the park idea on their ballots again in a proposal to spend $1,500 for starting and financing a park commission. This met defeat by a wider margin, 166 voting Yes to 380 No. Your historian thinks he found the reasons in newspapers published shortly before Election Day. People apparently feared such a commission would be able to spend mcmey without tax payers’ approval. Their op position stiffened when a new association campaigned for more features in the proposed park - a bathing beach in addition^ space south of Merrick Road and planting of trees to the north. Capt. Hanse beaded the local Board of Health, the Freeport Im itfo v e m ^ League, and Board of Tra<te cemmittee before his excuisiut into politics. He was a partner of Leo Fisbel, counsel to (he Village, in a real estate firm. *nie origte of lus title, “ Captain,\ cannot be traced In any written sources we found, but a uniform he wore when posing for his Village President photo and recoUeictioDs of long-time . .. ?
