FACTS ABOUT NEW STATE m e d i c a r e PLAN The factor of life insurance policies in Medical A^islance for Needy Persons has been misunderstood in some Instances and even misrepresented. I am told that some people are considering can cellation of such valuable protection in the mistaken belief that such action may make them eligible for Medical Assistance. No person or fomily should WM. M. UNDERWOOD Aimy PFC William M.' Under- wood, son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Underwood, 83 Webcrfield Ave., Freeport, was assigned to the 584th Enginr—•eer Company in Vietnam, April 18. Underwood entered the Army in November 1962, completed basic training at Fort Due, N.J., and was last assigned In Ger- The 20-year-old soldier attend ed Bay Shore High School. person even contemplate such serious action without first getting the A major fact is that no term insurance policy^ such as most GI policies and group insurance policies, in any way affects eligibility fur Medical Assistance or is taken into account regard less of the amount of the insur- Sccondly, life insurance with a face value of $1,000 (the amount paid in case of death) is exempt for each member of the family. Thus a family of four may have four $1,000 policies. Even if a person has a policy with a face'value'over $1,000 his eligibility for Medical Assistance may in no way be affected, or 'He “may \n'ot \ even- have- to use the excess to pay toward his medical expenses. First H would have to be de termined if the policy has a loan value. It may not have. If H has, the loan value would be considered an asset, as all sav ings are considered to be. Suppose the family’s income and other resources are less than the exemptions allowed. The -family might not be required to utilize any of the loan value of the insurance. MAyfair 3-7400 FRANCIS SLOVER Airman Francis Slover, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis A. Slover of 1523 Darling St., Baldwin, has been selected for training at Chanute AFB, lU., as an Air Fore aircraft weapons syestems spe cialist. The airman, a 1962 graduate of Baldwin Senior High School, re cently' completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex. Airman Slover attended New York State College at Farming- dale. Only when the combined amount of the Joan value and the savings exceed the total source exemptions would a fam ily use the excess' toward pay ment of its medical cxpensc.s. As .an example: Suppose, a family of four had n policy with a loan value of $l„)00, but had savings of only $1,000 instead of the ^,000 .s.-iv- tngs o.xcmpted. The $1,500 loan value would not even have to bo taken into uccuuiu for medical expL-nse purposes because the family’s savings excmplum is $3,000. In other words;, the loan value of the policy could be as mud) as $2,000 and still not have to bo used- for medical-ex peiT-ses... The policy in no way would be af fected. In fact, under no circumsUmccs is a policy-holder compelled to assign his policy or cash sur render it. Any individual or family with any question about life insurance or health insurance or any other important aspect of Medical As sistance should go to the local welfare department for factual, I impartial information.
