Bishop In -his capacity of Atlantic 130381 Director, Captain Bishop bears the responsibility of carrying out the directives, decialons-.and programs of the Maritime Administration. U- S. Department of Commerce, per taining-to merchant shipping and shipbuilding along the eninre length of the Atlantic coast from Maine to the Virgin Islands. His wide experience h ^ h e merch ant marine, including that ^ Mar itime’s Atlantic Coast Director since 1946, dates back to his first “signing - on’’ as an ordinary sea man In. 1927. He* made five trips around the worliTbefore reaching the age of 21 . The Atlantic Coast Director came up through the \hawsepipe'’ ships owne4 by the United States Shipping Board, Maritime Com mission and U j S. Lines, , During the years 1927 to 1941 he shipped out as -seaman, deck of ficer and eventually stood on the (brl<^e as master of his 'own ship. He has been cited for -papers on marine subjects and received the General Chairman's Award from In'the-prS^af American merchant I the Marine Section of the National fleet but found greatest satisfac tion serving on -board the lifeblood of our foreign commerce—dry cargo ships.
